THE GIFT

The gift is a story of how children learn through collaboration. Since the beginning of our "Beautiful Stuff" project we have encouraged the children to express their own ideas, and to share their work with others. They visit the Kindergarten Museum regularly to look at the work of their friends, and to talk about which pieces they like and why. The children have learned how to share ideas and elaborate their representations in a comfortable, and natural way. These skills translate directly into the academic areas of the kindergarten curriculum. Children's conversations about scientific and mathematical concepts deepen through conversation and the sharing of ideas. In readng and writing chldren typically share their ideas about a story, or information they gather from resource books. When they write they are constantly editing with each other, and with the teacher. Their published books represent a more formal collaboration and support system. Here in the story of the gift this collaoration is seen in a much more visual and graphic manner. It brings to light another way of learning and understanding the development of children in an enriched school environment.
