Sculpture

One of the goals of this Artist in Residency project was to create a permanent sculpture for the Kindergarten Art Studio. Our plan was to work with the children over a period of about two months to give them time to explore materials, and develop a way of working with them to express their own ideas. During this time we would be watching, listening and questioning, waiting for a common theme to emerge. One child's milk factory creation captured everyone's imaginations, and in no time we had necklace factories, music factories, and Dorito factories, among others. Children continued to work in the studio often adding titles, stories and drawings to their artwork. At the same time teachers and artists worked together to develop an idea for the collaborative sculpture. Mark Cooper with his students, Stacey and Seevon, constructed a wooden framework which represented a whimsical factory building. Then the childen used their own artwork which had been collected during the project to collage all of the surfaces of the factory and make it a statement of their own. The completed sculpture includes space to show current work, and is on permanent display in the Kindergarten Art Studio.
