Inspirations from Reggio Emilia

On March 12, 2004 Tobin Kindergarten Teachers Joanne Cleary and Betsy Damian facilitated and hosted a Pre-Institute Experience: "A Visit to a Reggio Inspired School," for participants in Lesley University's "Inspirations from Reggio Emilia Building Connections: A Contextual Curriculum An Early Childhood Institute for those working with children ages 2-6 years. Participants met with the teachers, visited the classrooms, visited the Tobin's "Beautiful Stuff" Studio, and participated in a materials workshop.

About thirty teachers from around the United States participated in the workshop. They viewed and discussed video from a "Studio" staff meeting and video of children at work in the studio.

Just as the children have done previously these teachers passed around an item, in this case a mini-telephone pole from a block set, and imagined that it could represent many different things, such as a toothbrush, a hairbrush, an umbrella, etc.

Using items selected from the "Beautiful Stuff" collection in the studio participants created their own stories, just as the children do when they have their turn in the studio.

Participants then carefully arranged their "stuff" on cardboard and recorded their stories to share with others.

These stories were just as interesting as those of the kindergarteners.

Abstract Gymnastics: These are insects walking on a balance beam. Since the insects are abstract, they can be whatever kind you like.
