This year 18 sixth grade students participated in an after school club to build solar cars. In pairs, students worked to design and build a car that would meet certain specifications. In fifth grade these students had the experience of building a car so the idea was to incorporate their previous knowledge into their second attempt. Students tested their cars at a Tobin School Solar Car Rally and then went on to M.I.T. on Saturday, May 17, 2003 to compete with students from many other communities.
The winner of the Tobin JSS was Demetrius, with his car, Static. Two cars made it to the semi-final round of the MIT JSS: Rampage built by Keana and Keanu and Speedsters built by Miles and Syed.
Students who participated in the club were: Abdul, Bakari, Callum, Dante, Demetrius, Isais, Jacob, Jared, Jordan, Keana, Keanu, Luis, Marquise, Michael, Miles, Patrick, Shabaz and Syed. Great job!
Tobin School was very fortunate to have volunteers organizing and running the club. Many thanks to Bill Haggan, Nate Kalowski and David Petty for your time, energy and help!
