Dear Tobin Kids:
You are cordially invited to a special event this Friday, October 30, 2009. It is a service day – a day to work together to care for our garden. We are putting the garden to bed so it can rest over the winter.
Since the beginning of time and all over the world, children, men and women have worked to keep the soil in their gardens and farms get rejuvenated and stay healthy.
This year everyone at the Tobin will help to prepare our ground for next year's growing season. We need the soil to be ready to plant more carrots, corn, potatoes, basil, tomatoes, marigolds and zinnias.
Here are some of the things we need to do.
Harvest potatoes and collect seeds so we can plant next year.
Add nutrients (healthy stuff!) to the soil, because the corn and potatoes used up a lot of nutrients to grow this year.
Plant spring bulbs so we have hope that winter will be over and we will see beautiful tulips in April 2010.
This year we are also going to add 17 plants to the shady garden. These are a diverse group of rhododendrons from 5 different countries. Friends started these rhododendrons from seed in 2001. The seeds came from the Royal Horticultural Society in England! I wonder how big they will be when you graduate from the Tobin? Thanks for your help, Tobin kids. We look forward to seeing you in the garden on Friday.
Sincerely,
The CitySprouts Committee and Louise Forrest garden coordinator
