About CPS

For more than 350 years, the City of Cambridge has prided itself on providing a quality education to all of its children.

With the founding of Cambridge in the 1630s, settlers made education a priority by setting up a college (Harvard) and “…by the side of the college, a fair grammar school, for the training of young scholars, and fitting of them for academic learning, that they are judged ripe, they may be received into the (Harvard) college…”
Over the years, the community’s commitment to education has continued to grow, change, and improve with the times, using all available means to insure that every child is afforded and has access to a safe and nurturing learning environment, a core curriculum that is rich and rigorous and which respects diversity in students learning styles.

Led by a dedicated and determined School Committee, the Cambridge Public Schools strive to provide excellent instruction in every classroom, always changing and improving to reflect the educational philosophies and the technologies of the times. These efforts are reflective of the community the School Committee serves, a community rich in cultural traditions, economy, and natural resources, a community that maintains its strength through the cooperative efforts of a diverse population striving to live, learn, and work together.

Over the years, the Cambridge Public Schools have helped produce thousands of interesting and renowned alumni. Recent graduates include a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, a Rhodes Scholar, several Olympic medal-winning athletes, and even a few Academy Award-winning actors and screenwriters.

More importantly, the Cambridge Public Schools have become known for graduating thousands of young people who lead productive and fulfilling lives. The Cambridge Public Schools have been, and will continue to be, a melting pot of children, families, and staff who thrive to not only educate themselves but to educate the world.

Today, the Cambridge Public Schools boast “one of the best public high schools in the state” according to Boston Magazine, a public Montessori school (the Tobin), a dual-language school (the Amigos), two Extended Learning Time Schools (the Fletcher-Maynard Academy and the Dr. Martin Luther King Schools), an Intensive Studies Program (at the Peabody School and the Kennedy-Longfellow School) and a wide variety of music, arts, and science programs at all our schools.
