Purpose of the Student Survey

  • Hearing from students in a safe, confidential context
  • Exploring differences between the experiences of individuals from different backgrounds
  • Identifying priorities that shape actions
  • Using data to learn and improve
  • In 2019, the Student School Climate Survey was administered for Grades 6 - 8. In 2020, the survey will be conducted with Grades 6 -12
What we learned in 2019

  • The growth mindset of CPS upper school students is in the 80th-99th percentile nationally.
  • Students feel encouraged by teachers to learn about people from different races, ethnicities, and cultures.
  • Students feel that their teachers hold them to high expectations around effort, understanding, persistence, and performance in class.

Areas needing improvement in CPS upper schools.
  • Students do not feel connected to the adults at their school.
  • As verified in other surveys, it will be important to focus on improving teacher-student relationships as part of school climate improvement.
