Mayor Marc C. McGovern

Mayor Marc McGovern is a lifelong Cambridge resident, proud father of four, social worker, and third-term City Councilor currently serving his first-term as Mayor for the City of Cambridge. He descends from a long line of community activists who taught him the importance of giving back and striving to leave the world a better place. Marc is guided by his deep commitment to social justice and his desire to serve and represent the City of Cambridge with integrity, action, and compassion.

As both a social worker and elected official, Marc’s focus has been on serving and supporting the most vulnerable members of the Cambridge community. From leading local and regional conversations on homelessness and opioid addiction to tackling key issues of affordable housing, income insecurity, and immigrant rights, Marc’s goal is to ensure that Cambridge is a socially and economically just community for all.

For the past 20 years, Marc has served the community in a variety of ways. In addition to serving four terms on the Cambridge School Committee, Marc was also member of the Cambridge Kids’ Council for close to a decade. Through the Kids’ Council, he helped write the first-of-its-kind city order guaranteeing children with special needs the ability to attend any city-run after school program in Cambridge. Marc served two terms as City Councilor while working 10 hours per week as the Clinical Support Social Worker for Farr Academy, a Cambridge school for children struggling with emotional, behavioral, or mental health issues.

Marc has coached Cambridge Youth Soccer and is the former president of Central Division Little Baseball League which serves over 200 children. Marc is also an active member of his Democratic Ward Committee and the Cambridge Democratic City Committee, taking on a leadership role to help elect progressive democrats to both state and national office.

In 2014, Marc was the first freshman City Councilor in a decade to be named Chair of the Finance Committee. In that role, Marc worked with the city administration to develop and pass a budget that not only kept property taxes low but also added a robust new set of services and programs and helped communicate the nearly half billion dollar city budget to the Council and the community at large.

Marc is grateful and honored for the opportunity to continue serving the people of Cambridge as Mayor and Chair of the School Committee, and is excited to work together to move forward as a community.
