The 2010-11 School Committee

ALFRED B. FANTINI, a lifelong resident of Cambridge, and graduate of the Cambridge Public Schools, will be the senior member of the Committee, serving his 14th term. Fred is employed by the Town of Arlington as the Deputy Treasurer. Fred holds a Master's Degree in Management from Cambridge College and an under-graduate Degree from Bentley College in Accounting and Finance. Fred is looking forward to working with the newly elected members and is happy to be returning as the "Dean" of the Cambridge School Committee.

RICHARD HARDING, a lifelong Cantabridgian, has served as an intern at Joe Kennedy's Citizen's Energy, as Director of Constituent Services for Senator Steven Tolman, is President of the Port Life Foundation, and former Chair of the Ward 2 Democratic Committee. As a former School Committee member, Richard's bold, effective leadership included serving as Vice-Chair and co-chairing the Budget Sub-Committee and Contract Negotiations. Richard co-chaired the Kids Council and brought his leadership to the Neighborhood Safety Task Force's Employment Sub-Committee. Richard Harding, founding member of the Port Action Group, is a respected community activist. Richard is a proud recipient of the NAACP Educational Excellence Award and the Cambridge Peace and Justice Award. Richard currently runs the Men of Color Health Initiative and is a program consultant to the new transitional jobs program, CambridgeWorks. Richard is a graduate of Cambridge Public Schools and Fitchburg State College. He is on the board of the Young People's Project and formerly on the board of the Community Arts Center. His daughter is a middle school student in the Cambridge Public Schools.

MARC McGOVERN, born on December 21, 1968, at Cambridge City Hospital, is a fourth generation Cantabrigian, whose family has called Cambridge home for nearly a century. Marc grew up in his family’s home in Riverside and attended Cambridge Public Schools, graduating from Cambridge Rindge and Latin in 1987. He has two children, Nicolas and William, who attend the Cambridge Public Schools. Marc has been employed as a social worker for over a decade, specializing in child and family issues and special education. Marc is currently the family support director at Farr Academy, a school for special education students located in Cambridge. In addition to his professional commitment, Marc has given much of his free time to helping children and to his community. He was a Cambridge Youth Soccer coach for 10 years, helped start the Peer Mediation Program in the Cambridge Elementary Schools, is a member of the Cambridge Kids’ Council, is the current president of Cambridgeport Little League and is actively involved in the Cambridge Democratic City Committee. Marc is serving his third term on Cambridge School Committee.

PATRICIA M. NOLAN is serving her third term on the School Committee. Ms. Nolan moved to Cambridge from Stamford, Connecticut to attend college, the first in her family to attend Harvard-Radcliffe, where she majored in Government. After college, she spent several years doing research in the field of American’s women’s history, then as policy researcher on work and family issues and a speechwriter for Brooklyn District Attorney Elizabeth Holtzman. She earned her Master's degree at Yale University's School of Management, where she founded a student newspaper. Ms. Nolan has broad experience in strategic planning and financial budgeting. She has served as CEO of an environmental company and a telecom sales and marketing company. Her professional experience includes work with McKinsey, an international corporate consulting firm, with LISC (the nation's largest intermediary serving community development corporations), and with the ICA Group, (specializing in worker-owned and community-based enterprises). Ms. Nolan has been a consultant to a range of mission-based organizations, including a legal staffing company, an environmental mutual fund, and a charter school founding group. She is married to David Rabkin, a senior manager at the Museum of Science, and has two children, who attend the King Open & Peabody ISP, after six years at the Amigos School. She is looking forward to another term of using her energy, experience as a manager, strategic thinker, and analytically driven problem solver to help make Cambridge schools the best in the state.

NANCY TAUBER lives in Cambridgeport with her husband, Tony, and sons, Jonah and Isaac, ages 9 and 12. She grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut, earned a B.A. in Sociology and Business from Washington University in St. Louis and a M.A. in Teaching from Simmons College. Ms. Tauber taught middle school social studies in the Newton Public Schools for 12 years. Since her children have been in school, she has been a volunteer in their preschools and elementary school and was the co-chair of the Graham and Parks Steering Committee (School Council). Ms. Tauber is looking forward to her second term on the School Committee. In addition to a special focus on the middle school years, she will continue to listen to CPS families, teachers, staff and administrators in order to make decisions that benefit the system as a whole and work as a team with fellow School Committee members.

ALICE TURKEL will be serving her fifth term on the School Committee. Alice first became involved in the Cambridge Public Schools in 1990 when she organized parents in an effort that led to the creation of the Cambridgeport School. Alice and her husband, Mitch Ryerson, have two daughters who attended Cambridge Public Schools from kindergarten through high school, and a son who is in fifth grade at the King Open School. When their son graduates from high school Alice and Mitch will have been Cambridge Public School parents for 27 continuous years. She has taught woodworking to students from nursery school through college level, and has also given professional development workshops for daycare and Headstart teachers. Alice received three consecutive Cambridge Arts Council grants, which she used to fund teaching in a Cambridge Public School. She received her Bachelors degree in Woodworking and Furniture Design from the Program in Artisanry at Boston University. Recently Alice took a few terms off from politics during which she worked with the Public Health Department on children’s health issues. She focused on nutrition, working to make school meals healthier and more appealing. Alice is looking forward to once again, serving Cambridge families as a member of the School Committee.
