Steam Night

STEAM Night 2019!

On Wednesday, February 27th we held our 4th annual STEAM Night! STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Thanks to parent and PTO chair Carroll Magill for spear-heading the event yet again! We had 12 hands-on activities spread out across the building led by a variety of parent volunteers. Activities included creating and keeping an Art Bot (lead by parent Alicia Volipicelli and her team from Lincoln Lab), the wind tube (led by parent Stos Koyanis), Makey Makey in the computer lab (led by Mr. McGonegal) - and this year an augmented reality sandbox (led by parents Lisa and Andrew Harteveldt)! Thank you to everyone who came out to support STEAM night. Many library classes prepared for the evening by reading the Cook Prize finalists. The Cook Prize is sponsored by Bank Street School for Education to draw attention to outstanding STEM picture books. If f you and your child would like to read any of the books together, follow the link. Cambridge author Sara Levine’s book Fossil by Fossil is a Cook Prize finalist. She will share her new book Flower Talk at Porter Sq. Books Saturday, March 9th at 3PM.

Literacy News: Haggerty Hears from Famous Children’s Author Cynthia Lord
Ms.Lord, is a famous children’s author who lives nearby in Topsham, Maine.

Author Cynthia Lord wrote a personal letter to three Haggerty students after receiving their Letter About Literature. In December, as part of our Bookeaters Club, three students wrote to Cynthia Lord, expressing their appreciation for her book and explaining how they enjoyed learning about migrant farm workers in Northern Maine. The students thanked Ms. Lord for helping them to better understanding themes of belonging and friendship as a result of reading her book, A Handful of Stars.

In her letter, she thanked 4th graders Sarah and Hanan and 5th grader, SaR’yah for, “reading your thoughts about my book.” She also enclosed personalized bookmarks and stickers for each of the girls. She shared news about her latest book Because of the Rabbit. The girls were very excited to hear from Cynthia Lord and they are looking forward to reading her new book. We have several of Cynthia Lord’s book in our school library, the girls highly recommend that you give her books a try!

Worm

CitySprouts
This year for the first time CitySprouts will be present at Haggerty throughout the winter! While the garden may not be the most appealing place to be during the winter, there is plenty of hands on plant-based learning to do indoors.
Here are some of the many possibilities: Planting in the classroom to learn about life-cycles and measure plant growth use graphing skills. Cooking is a great way for classes to create a meal from a region they are studying, or use a grain mill to grind wheat or corn into flour for baking bread. And of course, winter is a great time for students to observe worms and learn about how they turn waste into soil.
If you are feeling brave in the cold, visit the garden!

Nutrition
National Nutrition Month
In honor of National Nutrition Month, this March we are requesting all CPS Family Liaisons to consider including a brief nutrition blurb regarding the school food and wellness environment. Four blurbs have been compiled below with resources linked. We have mapped the blurbs to four weeks throughout March. Please contact Gabby Headrick, Public Health Nutritionist, at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Did you know Cambridge Public Schools have district-wide Wellness Policies and Guidelines? These documents help guide school administrators, teachers, staff, and families to make decisions that support a healthy environment. Daily recess, non-food rewards, and healthy classroom celebrations are all recommended by the School Wellness Policy and Guidelines. Find the Wellness Policy here and the Wellness Guidelines here

Week of March 11th, 2019
Some classrooms decide to celebrate students' birthdays and other occasions. To create a healthier environment, the School Wellness Guidelines recommend celebrating in ways that do not include food. Some ideas include extra recess instead of a party, or a fun game inside the classroom if weather is bad. Find more ideas to celebrate here and ideas for non-food rewards here.

Week of March 18th, 2019
When choosing to share food in a classroom, or requesting families to bring food, always encourage whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains and foods low in added sugar and saturated fats. For example, at a family breakfast consider a build your own yogurt bar with plain yogurt, fresh fruit, and allergen-free granola alongside water, instead of donuts and juice. Find some healthy classroom food ideas here

Week of March 25th, 2019
Breakfast and lunch is offered every day in all schools. Encourage your students to select non-flavored milk in place of chocolate milk and whole fruit in place of 100% juice. Sipping smarter drinks, such as low-fat milk or water, helps cut back on the added sugar children consume every day. The American Heart Association recommends children have no more than six teaspoons or 25 grams of sugar per day. Find more ways to cut back on sugar intake here.

OUTDOOR RECESS REMINDER
Being Prepared for Outdoor Recess – We try to hold outside recess as much as possible throughout the winter months! Please be sure that your child comes to school dressed appropriately for outside play - warm coats, hats, and mittens/gloves are a must, otherwise students will not be allowed to go outside for recess. When there is snow on the ground, students must also have boots and snow pants if they wish to play in the snow.

Separate but Equal

RACE MATTERS
Book Suggestion
Separate is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez & Her Family’s Fight for Desegregation

Almost 10 years before Brown v. Board of Education, Sylvia Mendez and her parents helped end school segregation in California. Mendez, an American citizen of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage, was denied enrollment to a “Whites only” school. Her parents took action by organizing the Latinx community and filing a lawsuit in federal district court. Their success eventually brought an end to the era of segregated education in California. Ages 6-9.
