Turkey Trot

Turkey Trot Fun!
On Wednesday, November 21st, the early release day before Thanksgiving break, the Haggerty students had a lot of fun turkey-trotting in the gymnasium with Mr. Materazzo. Students came to the gym for about an hour, in mixed age groups, to do collaborative games. There was a lot of teamwork, dancing, and giggles. Mr. Materazzo dressed as a turkey (you can find him in the top left photo). Thanks to parent Allison Celimli, for being our DJ for the day! Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for everyone's Turkey Trot participation ribbon!

Pigeon Day

Pigeon Day in Kindergarten
Last Tuesday, November 20th was Pigeon Day in Kindergarten! To celebrate the books by Mo Willems, author of "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!" (one among many), the four JK/K classrooms embraced all things Mo Willems. Darrin Johnson alumni parent, returned again this year to help with the fun! Here are some photos from that day!

Thank you to the Haggerty school community for making this cider pressing season a success! A shout out to the parents/guardians who helped make it possible for the classes to come out to the garden to press fresh apple cider. It may be getting colder, but the garden is still busy getting ready for the winter. In the coming weeks, classes will be planting winter rye, spring flower bulbs, and garlic. The winter rye will help prevent erosion over the winter and add nutrients back into the soil. Stop by to inspect the hearty kale and carrots before it is too late!

Haggerty Chorus
Haggerty Chorus welcomed Parents Nursery School to a special performance on Thursday, November 29. This was a great opportunity to practice our songs in advance of the Peace Concert. Thanks to Kate Benanti for connecting us with our neighbors across the street and organizing this visit!
Be sure to come to the Peace Day concert on Friday, December 14 at 8:15AM so you can hear our polished performance!

Coaches Corner
Dear Families,

Do you love to read picture books with your children? In this Holler, I have included a few resources to help your reading get “mathy.”

First of all, here are two lists of fun and engaging picture books based around math concepts. Many should be available at your local library. They also make great holiday gifts!
This first link includes books for K-5 graders.
This second link is for younger children, preschool-K.

Next, two researchers developed a list of tips for reading math books with young children. I especially love the open-ended questions they suggest asking.

Have fun with mathy reading!

From the Literacy Coach
Personal Narratives--Again? Yes, but this might be the year that we learn to love this genre.

As many parents know, every year, students in grades K-5 write Personal Narrative Stories. Students are asked to write stories about important moments in their lives. Students learn about the writing process and publish these narrative stories to share with their families and friends. Many of you have attended or will soon attend an Author Share/Author Breakfast to hear these narrative stories. Often, this is a tricky assignment for our students. Students don’t always know which moments are significant, and sometimes, it’s just too hard to pick just one small moment, even from a young life.

Children’s days are filled with significant small moments: they might make a new friend, learn to ride a bike, loose a first tooth, make a messy mistake, eat a delicious ice cream, or win as part of a sports team. This is the stuff that Personal Narrative Stories are made of, we want students to know personal stories matter at every age. This year, we will feature some narrative stories in the Haggerty Holler. Look for student short stories in the upcoming Holler editions. This week’s Feature Author is Hazel, Grade 5, please enjoy her story.
