Apple Picking

JK & K Go Apple Picking
On Thursday, October 11th, our four JK/K classrooms went on their first field trip! They traveled in a big yellow school bus to Smolak Farm in North Andover. They had a wonderful time exploring the orchards, picking apples, riding in a tractor, feeding the animals, and eating cider donuts! This trip serves as an interactive beginning to their study of the seasons.

Thanks to all the parents who were able to go along as chaperons! Thanks also to Friends of Haggerty for making this exciting adventure possible!

Library/Technology Corner
Earth Changes Project
Fourth graders study causes of changes to earth’s surface, both slow and rapid. This year they began research of rapid change in the library. Next students were filmed with their researched script in front of our library green screen by Carroll Magill. Lastly, Kevin McGonegal uploaded the footage for students to edit in the video editing software WeVideo. (Thank you FOH for purchase!). We can’t wait to share our finished products with the Haggerty community!

Reading

Need Volunteers: The library needs help with shelving books. Our carts of returned books are overflowing. Twenty minutes of your time would make an enormous difference in our library. Email me or stop by the library on the 4th floor.

SoraSORA (Overdrive app for schools): All students in grades 3-5 now have access to the Massachusetts Library System digital library collection which is growing every month!
Students sign in with their CPS Google account.

BookEaters Book Club: Since October 2, sixteen fourth and fifth grade students have been meeting in the Library as part of our Haggerty School BookEaters Club.

Every Tuesday students meet as an group of enthusiastic readers. They spend their lunch and recess reading and eating lunch together. We have two groups: Mrs. Russell’s group is reading, A Handful of Stars, by Cynthia Lord, and Mrs. Novogrodsky’s group is reading The Doldrums by Nicholas Gannon. We are enjoying eating lunch and reading together. The students read to each other, discuss the books, and get to know one another.

Here is a list of the Grade 4 and Grade 5 participants:
Doldrums: Shiffy, Henry, Hazel, Barbara, Niamh,

Handful of Stars: Hanan, Camille, Zainib, Sarah E, Zoe, Neva, Korrey, Hamza, Maya, Maggie, SyR’yah

Music

Music Corner
By: Shelley Irvin-Kent
First graders have taken their understanding of rhythm to the next level in music. Working with partners, students used popsicle sticks and foam hearts to create 4-beat compositions, and then documented them on paper.

A quick review for parents who haven’t been in music class four days per week:

one sound on a beat = quarter note, we say “ta”
two sounds on a beat = eighth notes, we say “ta-di”
no sounds on a beat = quarter rest, we are silent

Ask your child to show you how to they write a rhythm pattern!

Art Room

We held our first Family Help Day in the Art Room this past Sunday. Thank you to all the families who attended. We sorted pencils and created Peace card bags to take home. We sorted portraits into student folders, created and updated the ‘how to draw booklets’, cut out and put together ‘Spin a Friend’ kindergarten self portraits, sharpened crayons and sorted mosaics. Look for more Family Help dates coming soon.

Cambridge Bicycle Safety
Does your child bike to school? Do you bike with your child to school? Would you or your child like to get around by bike but feel it is not safe?

Cambridge Bicycle Safety is an all-volunteer group of Cambridge residents who are asking for safer bike lanes and a complete network of protected lanes throughout Cambridge. Separated lanes in the last two years--Cambridge, Brattle and sections of Mass Ave--have been the result of people in the community organizing. But we need more voices.
We are looking for stories of parents and their children who bike or would like to bike. If you have a story and want to learn more, email us.
