International Potluck Fun!
On Thursday, October 25th, the entire Haggerty Community filled the gym and cafeteria for our annual International Potluck! We had a great a turnout! The food was delicious and plentiful! 10 countries were represented by specific country tables - thanks to those families who brought in clothing and artifacts and interactive exhibits! Thanks to Tara Ahmed for entertaining us with her classic Indian dance (funded by Friends of Haggerty) - many of the students enjoyed learning it! A big thank you to all of you who cooked, helped set-up, welcomed others, cleaned, and represented many different cultures in our community!

Thanks to Carroll Magill, our PTO chair, for helping to organize this event! Thanks also to our art teacher Laurie Gaines, for a new art project that was started last night, a beautiful peace mosaic. Please look for more on that community project!

A very big thanks also to Tommy, our custodian, who stayed late that night - putting our school back together for the morning.

Any feedback on this event, please email Lissa or Carroll Magill (PTO President).

Music Corner
By: Shelley Irvin-Kent
Haggerty musicians have been very busy these last few weeks!

Kindergarten:
We just learned FAST and SLOW in the context of music class. Ask your child how Engine Engine sounds different when the train is going up a hill versus down or how the snail moves when she really needs a nap in Snail Snail. Have your child teach you Hunt the Cows (“wake up, you lazy bones and go and fetch the cattle…”) with the moves!

music notesFirst grade:
We just learned the symbol for when a beat has no sound: REST.

We already know the name for one sound on a beat (quarter note) and two sounds on a beat (eighth notes). Now we can read all kind of rhythm patterns! Ask your child to tap the rhythm fingers while singing Bow Wow Wow and show you where the rest is. Then see if your child can read this rhythm!

notesSecond graders just learned the symbol for when a sound lasts for two beats: HALF NOTE. Ask your child to show you the dive while singing Who’s That Tapping at the Window. See if they can read this rhythm!

We’re doing great rhythm work in music these days!

Why Does My Child Keep Talking about Active Listening?

Unpacking Active Listening

You may have heard that one of our school wide goals this year is Active Listening. We want to explain more about WHY this is a school wide goal.

Here’s the why:

The faculty at Haggerty deeply believes in creating classroom learning communities where everyone’s voice is heard and valued. We want every child to know that their thoughts & ideas are important. We want all children to feel safe to express their curiosities and to ask questions as a regular part of their learning days. Therefore, all children are expected to develop their abilities to listen with care and curiosity to others. We know that when children are listened to they feel important and cared for; and it is through the sharing of ideas and listening to each other that students learn.

We envision a vibrant school culture where all children engage in rigorous, authentic and joyful learning. We want families to know that by reinforcing and teaching Active Listening, your child’s voice and every child’s voice is heard and expected throughout the school day.

Active Listening skills go well beyond one’s ability to listen. As shown in the diagram, being an active listener means being an active learner - working to understand, asking questions, agreeing or disagreeing, considering perspectives, and building on others’ ideas.

So, while you may have heard Haggerty is teaching Active Listening this year, we hope that when you hear Active Listening, you will also hear, My child is an active learner whose voice is honored and valued at the Haggerty School. Please Ask your child (children), “What questions did you ask today?” or “What new ideas did you hear today?” or “What did you share?”

Parent/Caregiver Workshop: The Disruptive Equity Education Project w/ Dr. Darnisa Amante
Tuesday, Oct. 30 | 5:30 - 7:30PM
Childcare and light dinner. Please RSVP to Lissa.
The Disruptive Equity Education Project (DEEP) is excited to partner with the Haggerty School to support conversations on family engagement, connections between school and family community, and the way in which we can all rally together to support differing outcomes for our children and communities.
Our time together will focus on getting more clear about what diversity and equity means to schools and their families, as well as discussing how e can continue to work together to attain this school culture at the Haggerty School.

We will focus on three strands of learning and action: 1) Foundational learning about race, racism, equity and inequity. 2) Exploring how schools and families can commit to improving how they use equity in schools to improve outcomes. 3) Building a diverse learning community involving parents as partners.

Cambridge Bicycle Safety
Does your child bike to school? Do you bike with your child to school? Would you or your child like to get around by bike but feel it is not safe?

Cambridge Bicycle Safety is an all-volunteer group of Cambridge residents who are asking for safer bike lanes and a complete network of protected lanes throughout Cambridge. Separated lanes in the last two years--Cambridge, Brattle and sections of Mass Ave--have been the result of people in the community organizing. But we need more voices.
We are looking for stories of parents and their children who bike or would like to bike. If you have a story and want to learn more, email us.

LOST AND FOUND
Did you know that Haggerty has a growing pile of Lost and Found clothes right inside the Lawn Street Entrance of the building? If you can stop by and take a look we would love for some of these items to be returned to their rightful owners!

WINTER CLOTHING EXCHANGE
We have had a very mild fall, but the temperature will begin to drop! In the next couple weeks I will put up the winter clothing exchange in the main lobby. This is an opportunity to donate gently used winter clothes (jackets, mittens / gloves, snowpants, and boots) that your child has gotten to big to fit into. It is also a chance to take an item that your child may now need!
Begin to sort through your winter items, and I will send an email when it is set-up in the lobby.

ARRIVAL REMINDERS
In an effort to have your students start the day with success and consistency, we are asking that parents who drop-off their children do so by 7:55AM. The school day begins at 7:55AM, so if you come in after that, please sign-in in the office.

In every classroom, students are met with some form of “Morning Work.” This includes several tasks and routines for your children, all designed to build their independence.  Classroom teachers need to start the day with Morning Meeting by 8AM. This is hard to do when there are family members in the classroom. If you want to bring your child in, please do, but know that we’ll be encouraging you to leave by 7:55AM. It’s helpful if you allow your children to be independent in their routines in the morning. Ask them what the routines and expectations are, and have them show you how they are done. Your praise and support of their independence will reinforce it and support a smooth start to the school day.  Having too many adults in a classroom makes it hard for our students to know who to answer to and it can be confusing for our youngest learners.
