Back to School Night

Back to School Night

Wednesday, October 3rd was our annual Back to School Night! We had a great turnout of families! This year, the 4th and 5th grade families went right to classrooms at the start of the night. We got feedback that they wanted more time in classrooms, so we listened. Families in grades JK-3 started in the gymnasium with a brief presentation from Principal Nancy Campbell. She touched on some of our priorities this year, including Equity and Active Listening. She showed a brief video describing Active Listening and our students describing how it makes them feel when they are truly listened to - and when they are not. It clearly outlined how actively listening to each other makes us feel valued and important - and is the foundation of building empathy for each other. You will hear more about our focus on Active Listening this year!

We still need room parents in some classrooms! We need at least one room parent in the following rooms: Golding (107), Healy (106), Hassett (211), Moloney (306), Barker (307), Stewart (304), and Faucher (305). Please contact Lissa to volunteer!

Garden

CitySprouts Corner
Hello Haggerty Families!

I am looking forward to seeing you all in the garden. Please stop by to sniff, touch, and explore what is growing. I will be in the garden on Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings this year. Before CitySprouts, I completed my MS in Environmental Education at Antioch University New England. While working on my degree, I was able to get a diversity of experience teaching different ages throughout Boston. One of my favorite garden memories is pulling a carrot from the ground for the first time in high school and being able to eat it fresh. I am looking forward to creating life altering memories at Haggerty. This year you can expect frequent updates from the garden with tips, ways to explore, and recipes.

If you would like to volunteer for this year's cider pressing, please let us know. We will be pressing apple cider with classes on Nov. 6, 7, and 9. Email Andrea for more information.

Best,

Kiz, Garden Educator

Self Portraits

Art Corner
By: Laurie Gaines
The Art Room is buzzing with activity as the different centers are opening for creativity, experimentation and practice. We start off each year identifying who we are as Haggerty students. The students create self portraits that express their diversity and unique character. These portraits exemplify our school motto "Everyone is Different, Everyone Belongs." Look for the display on the first floor bulletin board outside elevator.

International Potluck
International Potluck
Thursday, October 25th | 5:30 - 7PM
Please help us plan this annual gathering of all families! In the past we have had families organize cultural displays of various countries and families bring food dishes to share that also represent a specific culture or country. Fliers went home in BackPack Express this week!

Help us plan this year's celebration of our wonderful school community. Planning meeting is Tuesday, October 9th at 8AM. We still need ENTERTAINMENT - so if you have a lead on some relatively inexpensive musical performers - please contact Lissa or Carroll.
Youcubed
Coach's Corner
Dear Families,

I hope that you had a wonderful beginning to the school year and that your child or children are coming home excited about learning! At the beginning of the year, all of our classrooms spend time with students working on open-ended math problems, many of them from an organization called Youcubed, which was founded by a Stanford professor named Jo Boaler. This organization promotes a growth mindset in math - the idea that we can ALL learn math and a positive attitude, effort and struggling with challenging problems helps your brain grow. Youcubed also has a parent section, which includes interesting math problems for families to try with their children at home as well as readings about helping students learn math. Check out the resources >>

Enjoy!

ARRIVAL REMINDERS
In an effort to have your students start the day with success and consistency, we are asking that parents who drop-off their children do so by 7:55AM. The school day begins at 7:55AM, so if you come in after that, please sign-in in the office.

In every classroom, students are met with some form of “Morning Work.” This includes several tasks and routines for your children, all designed to build their independence.  Classroom teachers need to start the day with Morning Meeting by 8AM. This is hard to do when there are family members in the classroom. If you want to bring your child in, please do, but know that we’ll be encouraging you to leave by 7:55AM. It’s helpful if you allow your children to be independent in their routines in the morning. Ask them what the routines and expectations are, and have them show you how they are done. Your praise and support of their independence will reinforce it and support a smooth start to the school day.  Having too many adults in a classroom makes it hard for our students to know who to answer to and it can be confusing for our youngest learners.

Crosswalk Reminder
