STEAM Night 2018!

On Thursday, May 17th we held our 3rd annual STEAM Night! STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. The night was another big hit! Thanks to parent and PTO chair Carroll Magill for spear-heading the event yet again! We had 13 hands-on activities spread out across the building led by a variety of leaders/organizations. Highlights included creating and keeping an art bot, wind tube, and Makey Makey the computer lab. View a complete list of activities and organizations. We had over 100 students who attended STEAM Night (not including adults and younger siblings). Thanks also to parent Alicia Volipicelli (parent) and her team from Lincoln Lab who ran the Art Bot, buzzing bristle bot, and rover bot room. This night would have not have been possible without the support of our Friends of Haggerty! Thanks also to parent Gordon Webster (New England Image Photography) for many of the beautiful photographs!

Poetry in the Garden with Sarah Grace Tuttle
First graders worked with local poet Sarah Grace Tuttle to hone their observational skills. It was a lovely way to use our CitySpouts garden to support writing. Thank you to the parents who helped with this visit!

Ballroom

5th Grade Ballroom Dance Showcase!
Our fifth graders put there ballroom dancing skills to work on Tuesday, May 15th in the CRLS gymnasium. For the past eight weeks our 5th graders have been learning to ballroom dance as a part of their Physical Education curriculum. They joined with four other elementary school's fifth graders to show off all their hard work and effort in learning several complicated dances. Congrats to Robel and Ruby for being awarded Citizenship awards for the 8 weeks. Well done Haggerty 5th graders!

Rainforest

Second Graders Undertake Bird Research!
Room 210 put their bird research on display to their families! They had each chosen a bird, and a short book about it, make a paper-maiche bird, and drew helpful diagrams. Thanks to all the staff who helped with this project - including Ms. Callender, Ms. Weinstein, Ms. Morton, Ms. Gaines, Ms. Novo, and Mr. McGonegal. This project required both research and art tools! Well done second graders! The full display of these projects is in the Lawn St. hallway. Room 211 research coming soon!

Rainforest

Kindergarten Studies the Rainforest
All of our Kindergarten rooms have been in the midst of an in-depth student of the rainforest. They read books, learn the geography, the species, the plant-life, the layers of the forest, and the animals. They also bring many aspects of the rainforest to life! Recently, Room 103 hosted their families, and gave them a tour of their rainforest museum. There were many displays, including a life-size giant lily-pad, a map of where the rainforests have died, a diorama, fruit to taste, and actual plants! Well done to all of our Kindergarten classrooms on this great research!

Art Donation: Thank You!
The art room recently received a donation of sticky back vinyl from the Caterina family. We used this material to make collages and bookmarks. Students loved the material so much they were inspired to make bookmarks to sell at the Book Fair this week.

Survey

Got feedback?
We can't wait to hear from you! CPS is conducting our first annual Family Survey, and we hope to hear from you by June 14th!

If you haven't already received an email or text message, or it's gotten lost in your inbox, check out our Family Survey page and click on your family's school(s). You can also find questions & answers about the survey, view our outreach plan, and even make comments on ways to improve our outreach strategy.

For those who don't have a good way to take it from home, watch for survey-taking stations at events at school. We value your feedback and hope to learn and improve based on what we hear from you.

The survey is part of our continuous improvement efforts, a key component of our CPS District Plan

Clock

Not enough hours in the day?
As part of our ongoing efforts to learn and improve as a school district, Cambridge Public Schools has identified a frequently-cited obstacle: time.

Please join with us in discussing the recommendations of a joint report from the Cambridge Education Association and CPS Administration, which proposes extending the length of the school day.

Beginning with these school-based conversations, and continuing with a broad community process in Fall 2018, the Superintendent will develop recommendations for any potential changes by Winter 2018-19.
