First Grade Expert Fair!

Our two first grade classrooms hosted an expert fair on Monday, April 30th. They wrote and illustrated books and posters on their topic of choice. Examples of topics the first graders were experts on were cats, dogs, peregrine falcons, skiing, hockey, being a big sister, and being a friend! Their books included a table of contents, chapters, a glossary, and lots of illustrations. They clearly spent a lot of time researching their topics and creating these books. Well done first graders! Thanks to all the first grade staff and the families who were able to take some time and see their hard work!

Rainforests

Library Corner

By: Sarah Novogrodsky, Library Media Specialist
Library lessons support classroom work. Kindergarteners have been learning about people who live and work in rainforests to complement their classroom study of rainforest animals and plants. We watched video clips, read Hands of the Rainforest: The Emberá People of Panama (R. Crandell) and used resources from Rainforest Alliance.

Quirk

Author Anne Quirk Visits Haggerty
Author Anne Quirk spoke with the fifth grade about her books The Good Fight: The Feuds of the Founding Fathers and This Is Our Constitution (written with Khizr Khan). Quirk encouraged students to always ask questions about what they read, to dig for information about history and to use their first amendment rights!

C. Smith

Author Charles Smith, Jr. Visits the Library
On Wednesday, April 25th, poet, author. and photographer Charles Smith, Jr. visited with the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders of our school. He started the presentation with a school photo of himself in the 8th grade, and went on to describe how he became who he is today - after aspiring to be an astronaut! Read on >>

My Name is Yoon

RACE MATTERS: COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS
Book Suggestion:
My Name is Yoon, Writer, Helen Recorvitz, Illustrator, Gabi Swiatkowska, Recommended for ages ?4 to 8

“Yoon’s name means “shining wisdom,” and when she writes it in Korean, it looks happy, like dancing figures. But her father tells her that she must learn to write it in English. In English, all the lines and circles stand alone, which is just how Yoon feels in the United States. Yoon isn’t sure that she wants to be YOON. At her new school, she tries out different names?—maybe CAT or BIRD. Maybe CUPCAKE!”
