Chorus

Haggerty Chorus Hits the Road!

On Thursday, March 22nd, the 4th and 5th graders of our Haggerty Chorus performed for the long term residents at the Neville Center at Fresh Pond. The students sang a full concert (11 songs!) for a packed room of seniors. The song, Red River Valley, was a favorite of one resident - and he sang his version to us as well! We hope to make another trip back to the Neville Center this Spring and visit again! Thanks to the Neville Center for welcoming us, parent Kate Benanti for connecting us to Neville, and our music teacher Shelley Irvin-Kent for organizing!

Math Night

Fun with Math! Family Card Game Night!
On Wednesday, March 28, parents/caregivers of students in JK-5 joined together with Nili Pearlmutter, Haggerty Math Coach, to learn three fun card games that families can play and practice their math skills together! We had approximately 30 families. Each family received a deck of cards, thanks to Friends of Haggerty. Ms. Pearlmutter taught everyone three games: Uh Oh 99!, Trash, and War (variations on this old classic game). These are three games that students often learn at school, so if you missed the night, ask your student if they can teach you one of these games at home.

Second Grade in the Library
HeidiAuthor Heidi Stemple shared how she comes up with ideas for books based on her personal experiences and interests - owling with her family and participating in the annual Audubon Bird Count. We are looking forward to her two new bird related books in the Fall of 2018.

Ranger Tim
RangerIf you see Ranger Tim at Fresh Pond, stop and talk. He is a wealth of information about the Fresh Pond habitat. He recently visited with the 2nd graders and taught them about the owls of Massachusetts.

Bird Study Continued in Art
Bird StudySecond graders are creating a drawing model of the bird they are researching in library. They use their 2D drawing model to create their 3D bird. Birds are created out of foil and tape/newspaper and tape and then covered with clay or paper maché. Paint and collage will be the finishing details.

Race Matters

Race Matters: CRLS Black Student Union Panel Discussion
Stacy Carruth, parent and chair of Race Matters: Courageous Conversations
On April 4, the Race Matters group hosted a panel discussion at Haggerty with two students, Hermella Kebede and Jonah Tauber, from the Cambridge Rindge and Latin Black Student Union (BSU) and their advisor, Kevin Dua (History Teacher at Rindge and Latin). We watched a series of powerful videos that the BSU created, two of which highlighted issues of racism that they have personally experienced while at the school. We also watched their videos entitled, Cambridge STANDS UP for the anthem: A Public Service Announcement, and Superwoman #1: A Black Student Union’s Tribute to Women’s History Month.
