Buddy and Earl

Read Across America Day - March 2: Vacation week is a great time to visit the public library and to think about your favorite book characters. Who will you be for Read Across America? Think of easy ways to transform yourself with items you have handy at home. Haggerty School will celebrate reading on Friday, March 2nd. Watch for more information in home folders.

Kindergarten students have been getting to know Buddy and Earl, two adorable characters created by Maureen Fergus and Carey Sookocheff. We extend the experience of our read aloud by placing Buddy and Earl in a familiar setting - our classroom.

Award Winning Books: The American Library Association announced its award winning books this week. Here are links to some medals we explore in library lessons. Thanks to FOH, our library will soon have many of the books to place in the hands of students!

Art Corner: Heart Art
By: Laurie Gaines

In December we studied how artists have used different symbols of PEACE and then students created their own colorful PEACE POSTERS to decorate the school for our music concert. This week, we continued our exploration of symbols, this time looking at the work of artist Jim Dine and how he was inspired by HEARTS. Students have been busy creating their own HEART ART combining different techniques such as collage, watercolor and craypas resist, line design, stencils and cutting, and stitching.

Moakley

Friends of Haggerty Corner
Dear Haggerty community,

Thank you for a successful FOH Winter Appeal! Because of your generous contributions, we surpassed our goal and raised over $8,500!! This money will go directly back to the classrooms and specialists, ensuring access to enrichment opportunities for all the children at our school, including field trips, visiting authors and artists, and valuable activities like the recent second grade folk dancing residency. Every gift counts so thank you!

If you are interested in checking out what Friends of Haggerty is all about come to a meeting! Contact Lisa Harteveldt for details.

Talking Differences in First Grade
On Friday, February 9, Ellie's mom Amanda came to talk to the first graders of Room 105 about physical differences between people. Ms Yeh and Amanda talked with the class about how to be kind and respectful with their curiosity. They asked kids to imagine what it would feel like to be asked a question about something that made them shy and then how to ask permission of people to have these conversations. Read on >>

Coaches Corner
By Nili Pearlmutter, Math Coach

Dear Families,

You may have heard your children talking about “math talks” as some of our teachers are trying out this routine in their classrooms. During a math talk, the teacher puts up a prompt - it could be an image or an equation - and the students discuss it. They might talk about the different ways they see an image or strategies for solving a math problem mentally. Math talks build students’ number sense and ability to “see” math. Here are some examples of math talk prompts at different grade levels:

First Grade: How many dots do you see? How did you figure out how many dots there are?

Math

Third Grade: Solve this problem mentally. What strategy did you use? Can you think of another way to solve it?

312 - 250

Fifth Grade: What fraction of the rectangle is purple? Red? Blue? What fraction is blue and red?

Math Square

Have a great vacation - and keep talking math with your children.

Art Volunteers

THANK YOU
Sunday Art Volunteer Day
Many thanks to the more than twenty parents and students who stopped by the Art Room this past Sunday, February 11, to help prepare materials for upcoming art classes and the art show. It was a busy afternoon. We punched holes in cardboard for stitching, sharpened pencils and sorted markers, prepped CDs for mosaic mandalas, mounted and labeled artwork and bagged up some to go home! It was a productive and fun day of service to our school. Thank you!
