THE FAMILY ENGAGEMENT EDITION!
Cambridge Commitment to Family Engagement: Children and teens thrive when policy makers, schools, and city and community organizations partner with families to actively support children’s learning and development. It is our shared responsibility to engage each other in meaningful and culturally respectful ways. This effort is continuous across a child’s life from birth to adulthood and carried out everywhere they learn and grow.

families at science morning

Second Grade Science Morning
Our two second grade classrooms had a culminating showcase of their science/social studies unit on December 19th. Families engaged in a variety of stations, lead by their children, focused on Mapping, Continents, Weathering/Erosion, Landforms and Glaciers. Parents/Caregivers were asked, for example, to put the continents in their correct location, to try to create sand by rubbing rocks together, and to create erosion by using a spray bottle on different types of debris. Our second graders worked very hard on all of these interactive displays and were informative tour guides for their parents/caregivers. Thanks to all of the parents/caregivers who were able to come and ask questions, and be reminded of their earth and geology knowledge. hanks also to all the second grade staff for this wonderful morning of sharing the student's learning.

This month Haggerty students have enjoyed special author visits in the library thanks to Friends of Haggerty. Tracey Baptiste author of The Jumbies and The Rise of the Jumbies met with fourth and fifth graders. The Jumbies is a Massachusetts Children’s Book Award title this year. Students learned about the folklore of Trinidad where Baptiste grew up surrounded by Caribbean tales. First graders got a jumpstart on their nonfiction unit with an author from local author, Sara Levine.

student artwork

Art Corner
By: Laurie Gaines
There are many ways parents and caregivers can help in the art room this winter and spring. Some jobs are ongoing and would require a weekly commitment. Others only take a couple hours and could be completed during the school day or even at your home in your spare time. Please contact our art teacher, Laurie Gaines ([email protected]), if you can help out or stop by the art room after drop off one morning to discuss in person.

Examples of tasks: Taking down artwork from around the building and sorting by classroom (During the day or after school); Make accordion and flip books for future student projects (During the day or at your home); Label bags for student work to go home (During the day or at your home); Mount artwork on construction paper for art show (During the day or at your home); Xerox and assemble “how-to” drawing animal pages (Photocopy at school during the day and then assemble at home)

Sunday, February 11 | 11AM - 2PM: Art Room Help Day

steam activity

3rd Grade STEAM Morning
By: Zephyros (Third Grade Student)
On 12/20/17, from 8 - 10AM, 3rd grade and some parent helpers worked together to make a fun day full of STEAM. In one room kids made two kinds of robots, air racers, and bristlebots. Air racers use wind to move and bristlebots use vibration to move. And then kids swapped rooms. In the other room kids made cardboard automata, where dowels and foam wheels bring cardboard to life. It taught kids how to be cooperative and solve problems. I think kids will have a lot of fun at steam night! (STEAM Night is Thursday, May 17th) Thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped make this morning possible - including Stos Koyanis, Alicia Volpicelli, Carroll Magill, Andrew Harteveldt, Jenny Gotwals, Allison Celimli, and Mike Andrle (volunteer).
