Dear CPS Community,

Although the school year is still new, our students and educators are working hard, having settled into their daily routines. I am very proud to work in a school district that is so committed to a culture where rigorous, joyful, and culturally responsive learning can take place.

At the same time, I know that some members of the CPS community are dealing with a great deal of stress outside of the classroom. As news reports from Puerto Rico and other hurricane-devastated areas continue to be dire, I want to update you on our community-wide response.
  • CPS has begun to receive transfer students from hurricane-stricken areas, and we expect to welcome more in the weeks ahead. Please know that we warmly welcome these students and families.
  • Volunteers are needed the City donation drives. If you would be available to help on October 21 - 22 between 9AM - 5PM, please contact Adam Patten from the office of Mayor E. Denise Simmons.

  • We continue to encourage staff members and families to take care of yourselves, and watch for signs of stress among students. To help the helpers who may be stressed by the situation in your extended family, Amigos School is also opening its doors for a free, Spanish-language mindfulness program that starts October 16th at 6:30PM. Contact Amigos School for more information.

We hope that each individual member of our community - students, families, teachers and staff - feel connected to the wider community that is here to support you.

If you find that you are facing a concern and don't know who can help, please reach out to a Principal, counselor, or member of our administrative team. Our success will depend on the caring community that we build together.

Design Lab

Educators as Innovators:
Cambridge Educators Design Lab

CPS is proud to be taking part in an innovative opportunity to cultivate the creativity and insights of our educators known as the Cambridge Educators Design Lab (dLab).

Recently featured in a story on the website Medium, the dLab is making an impact already in our school district. Approaching challenging problems through the lens of Design thinking, dLab participants have recently tackled problems like:

  • How might public schools capitalize on educators' experiences, expertise, and passions by changing the way in which problems are identified and addressed as a district? View the video >>
  • How might we create an integrated, standards-based curriculum that incorporates the interests of students? Watch the Video >>

The dLab offers professional development classes for teachers, as well as mixed-audience workshops for educators and community members.

Library Cards for Every Kindergartener
Kindergarten families and teachers may have noticed a new form in this year's Annual Forms packet. This year, CPS is participating in a nationwide effort to help children get their first library card, through their school.

We are very excited about this partnership and look forward to distributing the new library cards!
