Spring Concert

Beautiful Music at the Spring Concert!
On Friday, June 2nd, our school community gathered to hear the beautiful voices of almost all of our students. Grades JK-4th performed, as well as the Haggerty Chorus. Thanks so much to music teachers Shelley Irvin-Kent, Caitlin Mehta (long-term substitute for Shelley Irvin-Kent), and Andrea Gaudette for their wonderful music instruction! Their hard work was evident! Ms. Irvin-Kent surprised us with a visit, to see everyone shine and introduce her newest addition to the family - baby Nico. The music curriculum at Haggerty is designed around the Kodaly philosophy and method of music education. This method is based on structure and sequence, while maintaining artistry in learning traditional folks songs. At Haggerty, grades JK-2 have music four times a week with Ms. Irvin-Kent and grades 3-4 have music once a week with Ms. Gaudette. A chorus elective is offered to all students in grades 3-5, and all 5th graders participate in a twice weekly instrumental program.

Ballroom

5th Grader's Mad Hot Ballroom!
After an 8 week curriculum on ballroom dance in their Physical Education class, our 5th graders hit the CRLS gym to strut their stuff. On an evening late in May, they joined together with four other elementary schools to show off all their hard work and effort in learning several complicated dances!

Particular recognition was given to Medhanit and Will - as ambassadors over the eight week instruction period, and to Sasha and Eleanor - for their dancing that evening! Well done to all of our 5th graders and a big thank you to our PE instructor - Tom Materazzo!

Books Due Back by June 9th - That's today!
It’s time to look for Haggerty library books that may be hiding in your house. Look for a barcode on the back that says “Library Media Center” or “Haggerty Library.” Thanks for helping us get all our books back by June 9th.

Actress Brings Deborah Sampson to Life!
Massachusetts American Revolution heroine Deborah Sampson visited with the 4th and 5th graders. Students were treated to an incredible one-woman show about her life. She shared how disguising herself as a man and joining the Continental Army, was one of the few ways she could change her destiny as a woman in the 1700’s. Visit actress Judith Kalaora’s website to learn more.

New Tech!
TechThe CPS Library Department has purchased PebbleGo, a spoken-word audio database for K-2 to support research in the early grades. It has already been a great resource for second grade nonfiction research.

New Librarian at Aberdeen St. Branch
There’s a new librarian at the Collins Branch (our sister branch). Her name is Margaret Macri. The last week of school she will visit the Haggerty to share CPL summer reading programs. Please stop by to welcome her to the neighborhood if the Collins is your local branch library.

Beginning next year, families will automatically register for a CPL card when they complete the school system paperwork.
Stay tuned for some great Summer Reading lists and some tips for fun family reading!

J. Higdon

May’s Secret Song is revealed!
Title: Autumn music
Composer: Jennifer Higdon
Country: United States
Date: 1962
Musical Concepts: Contemporary Classical Music, Wind Quintet
This song is called Autumn Music, named after the essence and images of autumn. In Autumn Music, we hear the sounds that mimic explosions of colors, crispness and clarity, and the air that suddenly snaps when the seasons change. The sounds you hear are played by a Wind Quintet.
Unlike most composers, Jennifer Higdon did not begin studying or listening to classical music until she was a teenager! Jennifer shows us that if you stick with something and you keep working at it, if you love it, you can do it! Today, she is one of the most frequently performed living composers.
