Author/Illustrator Aaron Becker Visits!
Author and artist Aaron Becker visited Haggerty on Tuesday, March 28th. Every grade level heard his descriptions of creating his three wordless books: Journey, Return, and Quest. He presented different stages of his illustrations and the power of our imagination with wordless books. Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for supporting this day long visit from this amazing author/illustrator! He commemorated his visit by signing our “Invitation to the Library” mural. Read on >>



Library Corner

Kindergarten
Learning how to locate a book on the shelf starts in kindergarten. We use “theme rings” with images of book covers and spine label information to help us head to the correct section of the picture books. We have been very fortunate to have Cambridge School Volunteer Jessie Rabban create theme rings for students to use. Theme rings include books frequently requested by kindergarteners such as dinosaurs, transportation, monsters and cats/dogs. Students head off with a partner to locate the book they want. Meeting with success feels great!

First Grade
More nonfiction adventures in the library to support the first graders classroom fun with nonfiction. We looked for facts in Diary of a Worm and confirmed them when we read Wiggling. PBS provided us with some worm humor thanks to the Wild Kratt brothers.



Music Corner

Kindergarten
Over the past month, students have studied Carnival of the Animals by a French composer, Camille Saint-Saëns. While listening to the pieces, we did movements, played imaginary instruments and read the book of commentary by Barrie Carson Turner. Ask your child about the animal sounds that can be played by many instruments.

First Grade
First Graders have recently come home with the second volume of My First Grade Music Book. In this book, they demonstrate the ability to read and write their first rhythmic elements: TA, TA-DI, and rest. TA is what we call one sound on a beat and TA-DI is what we call two sounds on a beat. Rest is what happens when there are no sounds on a beat. As students to show you how they read and write TA, TA-DI and rest.



The Great Pea Race!
Fourth Grader Elliott, reported that his class planted peas at the bottom of the stairs near the bus stop. He looked down and noticed a worm under a rock in the Haggerty Garden. Gardner Greg picked it up and they watched it jiggle. His advice - “Stay on the walking stones, so you don’t disturb the worms!” Our 4th graders will be monitoring how fast their peas grow this Spring!



First Grade Non-Fiction Expert Morning!
On Thursday, April 6th our first graders showed off their expertise about their favorite non-fiction topics! They created posters with the highlights of their topics - filled with fun facts and pictures. Students also created a short quiz to give after they presented the facts about their topics! Families were able to move around the classrooms and hear from all of our highly knowledgeable students! Well done First Grade!
