Haggerty Chorus Performs at the Providence Bruins Game
On Friday, November 18th approximately 50 of our Haggerty chorus members traveled to Providence, RI with their family members to sing after the first period of the Providence Bruins Game. Traffic was heavy headed south on a Friday evening - but the kids were patient and excited. They enjoyed the first period of the game and then entertained the crowd from their seats - while being projected on the huge Jumbotron. They sang "This is the Moment" from Jekyll and Hyde. Students represented Cambridge well and it was joyful to see their smiling faces on the jumbotron!
A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Irvin-Kent for getting our chorus ready for this big opportunity. Thanks also to all the families who supported the students in making this trip! Many families made a road trip out of the night, and some families joined Ms. Mapel and I on the bus. Thanks also to Friends of Haggerty for funding the school bus to get us there!
Winter Clothing Exchange
 It's getting cold outside! Please bring in your gently used winter clothing - jackets, boots, snow pants hats, mittens or gloves, scarves - that no longer fit your children. It's a donate/take what you need system.

Authors Visit with Third Grades
 Do you remember driving by 185 Fresh Pond Parkway and seeing people with cameras and telescopes looking up? A pair of local authors became fascinated with the red-tailed hawks of Cambridge and wrote a book to capture our home town story. They met with both third grade classes to answer questions about the hawks. The book is for sale at local book stores and Audubon shops.
Second Grade
Second grade wrapped up their study of Cherokee folktales by trying their hand at creating scratch art similar to the illustrations in the books. The link to the slide show of student work will be shared in the next Holler.
Third Grade
Third grade is learning to use the new library catalog. Successful book searching!

Math is all around us! One way to support your child’s learning in math is to give him or her little problems to solve as you go about your daily lives - and one thing we use in our daily lives is money! In this Holler, I’m going to suggest ways you can help your child learn to solve problems that involve money. Often, children really enjoy chances to use money in real life.
Kindergarten and First Grade: Pull out coins from your pocket. Encourage your child to sort them into piles and talk about what each coin is named. Talk about how much each coin is worth. What is worth more, a nickel or a dime? Give your child a chance to trade: What would be a fair trade for a nickel? What would be a fair trade for a dime?
Second and Third Grade: Give your child a few coins (e.g. 2 dimes and 4 pennies) and ask him or her to figure out how much the coins are worth. Encourage him or her to find different ways to make amounts like 25 cents or 1 dollar. Whenever possible, give your child the chance to use money in real life situations and to figure out how much two or more items will cost. For example, if you are at the store buying milk or milk and eggs, ask your child to figure out what bills and coins to use to pay.
Fourth and Fifth Grade: Ask your child to figure out more complicated real life situations. Have him or her figure out how much change you should expect when paying for something. Encourage your child to help with budgeting for events like meals or birthday parties.

JK - 2nd Grade Movie Night!
This past Friday, November 18, Haggerty hosted its first Family Movie Night for students in grades JK-2. Around 150 people attended a pizza dinner followed by a special screening of Finding Dory on the big screen in the gym. We had a great turnout and it was a fun night for everyone!
A special thank you to all of the room parents who helped organize the movie night, in particular Carroll Magill! We hope to follow up with a similar family event sometime in January or February. If you have ideas or would like to be involved in the planning, please talk to your room parents or our room parent coordinator, Jen Richards.
Help in the Art Room: Thanks!
A big thank you to all of the families who stopped by this past Sunday to help in the Art Room! It was a fun and engaging afternoon of cutting, sorting, gluing, and prepping various materials that will be used by all Haggerty students in upcoming art classes. We will definitely try to plan some similar drop-in art and/or volunteer activities in the future, so stay tuned...
