A very professionally made banner (by Jan Ferrara, Jennifer Miles, Martha Sieniewicz and Patty West) hung outside the school
(from Ms Hassett’s room), welcoming folks to “Haggertyville, where reading
matters”!
However, even though it was Dr. Seuss' birthday, there was still SERIOUS work to be done!
Haggerty was the place to be on Super Tuesday for all Dr. Seuss fans (and
voters.. Horton’s campaign was ahead with “he meant what he said and said
what he meant ”).
There was a delightful sign post in the lobby directing you here, there, to the places you’ll go, to green eggs and ham and the Bellowphone too (thank you Rowan Murphy and Jeanne Smith for those helpful directions!).
The day began with Paul Toner (President of CTA) as The Cat in the Hat, reading to the Kindergartners.
Larry Tish, an actor and parent of Anna
Tish, and his partner performed Oh, the places you’ll go for the First and
Second graders, who also had fun participating as human machines making
bananas, chocolates and the like.
Heather Unruh from Channel 5 read The
Lorax to the First grades,
The Third grades lunched on Green Eggs and Ham, in the cafeteria with Mayor Sullivan (and his son).
Heather Unruh also toured the building to say "hello" to all of our students!
Leona the Lion, from the PBS show "Between the Lions," roared into the library to read to our students.
The kids (and adults) had a lot of fun with “Guess the (Seuss) Book” game, created and put up just outside the cafeteria by Diane Norris.
Mrs. Henry and Mrs. Kaveney always make an event more festive!
A special thank you to Carol Sheehan and
her cafeteria staff for cooking the green eggs.
The celebration finale was a funny and entertaining performance by Mr.
Leonard Solomon.
He played some “Seuss-like” instruments (he built
himself, mostly from “garbage”…dog food cans and the like) including...
...the
Majestic Bellowphone!
Most of the instruments seemed fairly complex and
convoluted, with bells and whistles all over!
This enjoyable performance
also included some amazing juggling by Mr. Solomon.
It was quite a sight to see the red and white Seuss hats all over our
school that day. Thank you to Nancy Hays, and her team of room parents
(specially Charron Alves, Peggy Burnieika, Debbie Henry, Valia Kattar,
Ellen Kolton, Mara Levine, Kelley Mahoney, Jennifer Miles, Denise Renzi,
Robin Tish, Jessie von Hipple and Erika Wentorth) and all our teachers for
making it possible.
The Suess artwork, cutouts, flyers in the library, lobby and rest of the school created a very special “Seuss atmosphere”,
thanks to...
...our brilliant artist Jan Ferrera and the talents of Jennifer Costa, Jennifer Miles, Rowan Murphy, Diane, Martha Sieniewicz, Jeanne
Smith, Erika Wentworth, and Patty West.
Thank you to all the teachers and Diane, our fabulous secretary, for your encouragement, patience and contribution towards making this a
memorable day.
Thank you, Karen Kosko, for your tremendous energy in
creating an exciting day that will long be remembered in honor of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Day!
