Message from Dr. Salim on Recent Tragedies

Dear CPS Community:

Many of us are reeling from the tragic news emerging over the past few days. First we received reports of a devastating school shooting in Florida. Then yesterday, we learned of a tragedy closer to home, when a promising young educator from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Sam Bixler, passed away from injuries sustained after an accident in January.

As CRLS Principal Damon Smith remarked in notifying his school community about Mr. Bixler’s passing, these events may feel like a double blow. It is hard to comprehend such senseless loss of life.

I want to take this opportunity to remind you about the many resources that are available to members of the CPS community who need support.

  • Staff members may access free counseling and support from our confidential Employee Assistance Program.

  • For those outside of the high school community, you may be comforted to know that our high school has had grief counselors on site to support both faculty and students with their grief.

  • If you or your family are coping with these or other personal challenges, I encourage you to research supports that are available through Cambridge’s community resource site, FindItCambridge.org.

Please reach out to someone you trust if you can’t find the help you need or just need to talk. During difficult times such as these, it is crucial that we remember to take care of ourselves and one another.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Salim
Superintendent
