Improving Elementary & Upper School Schedules to Advance Equity

Improving Elementary & Upper School Schedules to Advance Equity
Posted on 01/07/2019

Report CoerOn January 7, Superintendent of Schools Kenneth N. Salim released a draft proposal to change elementary and upper school schedules.

We invite members of the CPS community to provide feedback on this three-part proposal, which includes:

  • Supporting ongoing school improvement with a clear vision and actionable scheduling guidance
  • Lengthening the regular school day for elementary and upper schools by 45 minutes to create the time and flexibility to support all learners, plus expanding professional time for educators
  • Improving coordination with the out-of-school time (OST) community to make afterschool and enrichment programs accessible to more students

Community feedback will help CPS develop a revised proposal, which will be presented to the Cambridge School Committee for consideration. Then, bargaining discussions with the Cambridge Education Association (our local educators union) would begin. If any changes are made, they would not be effective until at least September 2020.

Please note: Discussions about improvements to high school schedules, which would not include significant changes to the length of the school day, are underway. More information on that process can be found here.
