Fifth Grade Dance Unit

The Dance Unit is an important part of the Physical Education Department Curriculum. Each year fifth graders from all of our schools take part in this eight-week unit. The Physical Education staff, in collaboration with dance professional teachers, use the program as an educational tool to develop social awareness and self-esteem utilizing five social dances as the vehicle. The program is an all-inclusive, curriculum based, teaching approach that breaks down social barriers, provides opportunities to practice honor and respect and learn about communication and cooperation, via the basic fundamentals in Meringue, Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango and Swing. There are also some Hip-Hop elements intertwined with the choreography to add a fun modernized twist to the style of dance. The program concludes with an exhibition showcasing each of the participating elementary schools’ amazing talents and abilities.
