Department Vision

The World Language Department supports and guides its students along their language acquisition journey and instills in them a passion for learning, living, and loving their chosen languages and the cultures associated with them. Through the teaching and learning of world languages, students develop life-long skills to communicate effectively, and empower them to make real world connections as global citizens.

High School Overview
World LanguagesThe Cambridge Public Schools World Language department takes pride in offering a wide range of language learning opportunities to prepare our students to succeed in today’s diverse world. Students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School may choose to immerse themselves in the study of French, Arabic, Chinese and Spanish, Latin or American Sign Language.  High school offerings range from beginner through Advanced Placement for Chinese, French and Spanish. Elementary & Upper School Overview
Students at the Upper School level generally select between French and Spanish, committing to studying one language during grades 6-8. Putnam Ave. Upper School also offers Chinese in Gr. 6-8. These students generally enter level two honors of that language at the high school level. There is a minimum language requirement at CRLS of two courses in the same language. There are several elementary level immersion programs with pathways for continued learning through the upper school and high school levels. Learn more >>

Student Travel
World Language students can avail themselves of exchange programs and travel opportunities for each language offered. Travel experiences include trips to France, Italy, Cuba, Spain and China. The high school has a state-of-the-art World Language laboratory to reinforce speaking proficiency, and the Upper School programs benefit from new textbooks and technology suites available in all classrooms. The Upper School programs have developed a coordinated language curriculum at each campus as well as electives to reinforce students’ cultural experiences within each language. Read more >>

Technology & Partnerships
There are a variety of partnerships developed within the larger community and with local colleges. Teachers have been trained in using technology such as iPads and Eno Boards in the classroom and strive to incorporate technology in a meaningful way in all lessons. The Cambridge World Language Department is a member of the Flagship-Chinese Acquisition Pipeline Consortium, which focuses on designing model Chinese curriculum programs to be replicated across the country.
