Art Department Learning Expectations
Grades 9-12
Cambridge Rindge and Latin School
The learning expectations created by the art staff of CRLS are overarching ones and align with the State Frameworks in their format of basic and extended study. They reflect learning in any art class taught. Further expectations are written for some. Basic study refers to the first year of study in any discipline (ceramics, fundamentals, etc.). Extended Study refers to the courses completed by the student who has taken at least two courses in sequence, but there may be as many as three or four in a strand. In intermediate courses the teacher reaches both backward - to strengthen and deepen skills and understandings - and forward - to begin to introduce some of the advanced standards. Occasionally students skip an intermediate level by displaying advanced understanding in their portfolio achievement.
At CRLS, students are required to take one year's work in the arts (art, music, drama, or dance) for graduation. Those who are interested may take more courses. Work is underway to restructure the program offerings to create more core classes in a manner that strengthens the core and the sequences and also allows students to move freely from one art discipline to another after the foundation year.
