Foreign Language Department Learning Expectations
Cambridge Rindge and Latin School
Grades 9-12

The learning expectations of the CRLS Foreign Language Department, in line with the state frameworks and national standards, focus on oral proficiency in the target language emphasizing the four basic skills of language development:  listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  In addition, students are exposed to the culture of the language being studied; they learn to appreciate differences/similarities between their culture and the language being studied.

At CRLS students have a choice of language study:  Spanish, French, Italian, Latin, or Portuguese.  There are four levels for each language, while Spanish and French offer Advanced Placement classes.  There is a two year mandatory language requirement for graduation.  It is hoped that students will take advantage of the course offerings as electives in upper years and go beyond the proficient level, to attain fluency in a second language.
