Support & Enrichment Programs
Achievement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
AVID is a program designed to prepare and support bright students who are
underachieving, underserved in the college system, or fi rst generation college
students, in Honors and Advanced Placement courses. The AVID class, held within
the regular school day, provides support, academic monitoring and tutoring. AVID
students commit to taking Honors or Advanced Placement courses along with
the AVID elective. AVID teachers work daily with students to help keep track of
assignments and notes. Students also participate in tutorial groups in the AVID
classroom where they improve their study skills, test preparation, time management

ADOLESCENT PARENTING PROGRAM (APP)
The Adolescent Parenting Program is specifically designed to meet
the needs of teenage mothers and fathers, and teenagers who are
pregnant. Students who are interested in this program should see
their counselor.

AHORA: BRIDGE TO THE FUTURE
Ahora is a bilingual/multicultural youth enrichment program
geared toward Latino youth at CRLS and in the Cambridge community.
Our goal is to help Latino youth realize their potential by
providing tutoring, individual and group counseling, higher education
and job counseling, recreational and cultural activities and

AHORA: PUENTE AL FUTURO
Ahora/Puente al Futuro es un porgramma bilingue y multi-cultural
que liene como fin el enriquecimiento de los jovenes latinos de
CRLS tanio como los de la comunidad. Nuestra meta es ayudar a
los jovenes latinos a alcanzar su potencial a traves de los siguientes
servicios: Tutoria, asesoria individual y agrupal, consejos en cuanto
a estudios universitarios, ayuda financiera, y empleo, actividades
recreationales y culturales, y comunicacion con los padres latinos.
BILINGUAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
(BELA)
The English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education
programs meet the academic and social needs of non-English
speaking students and help to achieve smooth integration through
better cultural understanding among all students. Instruction is
given for growth and progress in mathematics, science, history,
culture, and language arts. At the same time, the student is given
instruction in English geared for his/her level of competency. The
transitional bilingual program allows the student time to learn
English as a second language as well as American history and
culture while continuing progress in his/her first language. Students
will make the transition to a standard classroom once they
have completed the program.
CAMBRIDGE CENTER FOR ADULT EDUCATION
The Cambridge Center for Adult Education offers scholarships to
CRLS students for a variety of interesting courses. These courses
are for enrichment and cannot be used for credits.

CAMBRIDGE-HARVARD SUMMER ACADEMY / SUMMER SCHOOL
The Cambridge-Harvard Summer Academy program is free and
open to all current Cambridge Rindge and Latin School students as
well as rising ninth graders from the Cambridge Public Schools.
All current CRLS students in the ninth, tenth and eleventh grade
may enroll in the Summer Academy. Students must consult with
and have the necessary guidance counselor recommendation before
being accepted into the program.
CRLS CHALLENGE PREP
CRLS Challenge Prep will be operated by Cambridge Housing
Authority and located at the Windsor Street offices. The program
will provide educational services to regular education students who
are: suspended from CRLS for more than 5 days; under the age
of 16 and are expelled from CRLS; or expelled andover the age of
16 if appropriate. Each day students will receive instruction in
academic subjects, life skills, physical education, and group and
individual counselng. The daily class schedule will be the same as
at the high school.
HARVARD EXTENSION SCHOOL
The Harvard Extension School gives priority to seniors and
juniors. CRLS students can take Harvard Extension School
courses that are advanced beyond the level of CRLS courses and
do not supplant the CRLS curriculum. Eligible students must
complete the Harvard Extension application, a scholarship application,
an essay, and a teacher recommendation form. All students
must pay the $35.00 registration fee and are responsible for the
costs of books and materials. Some CRLS students may also be
eligible for the Lowell Scholarship Program for tuition reduction.

IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION / COUNSELING AND
INTERVENTION RESOURCE CENTER (CIRC)
The mission of the CIRC is to provide students with an immediate
opportunity to improve upon specific inappropriate behaviors and
attitudes. The CIRC will address inappropriate behavior through
counseling services, parental conferences and completion of
specific learning behavior improvement packets.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AND FAMILY CENTER

MCAS SUPPORT AND THE MCAS CENTER
The MCAS Center offers review classes for students who have not passed the MCAS. Instruction is individualized based on students’ areas of weakness. Students are welcome to come to the MCAS Center during directed study and lunch for additional help. The MCAS Center also offers review classes during and after school and on Saturdays.
MCAS PREPARATORY CLASSES
MCAS Prep is offered in grades 10 in the first semester to provide students with additional support in mathematics and/or language arts, as well as test taking strategies to help prepare them for the exam. Students in grades 11 and 12 who have failed the exam may also take MCAS Prep to help increase their performance on the exam and strengthen areas in which they have had difficulty.

The Office of Special Education offers many programs at CRLS.
These programs are designed to provide students who have an
Individual Education Plan with the most effective opportunities to
learn and develop the skills necessary for a successful adult life.

OUT OF SCHOOL INSTRUCTION
The Out of School Instruction program provides tutoring in an
alternative setting for those students who are temporarily unable to
attend school, usually due to illness. If a student requires out of school instruction, a parent/guardian
should contact the student’s guidance counselor or Dean of
Students. Certain forms (State Form SPED 16) must be filled out
and signed by a doctor.
PRINCETON REVIEW SAT PREP
This course helps students develop basic verbal, math and test taking skills necessary to be successful on the SAT exam. Students are provided with 4 diagnostic tests, a Beat the SAT Manual, 4 full practice tests, access to the Princeton Review Online Student Center and personalized computer generated scoring.
READ 180
READ 180 is an intensive reading intervention program that is proven to meet
the needs of students whose reading achievement is below profi cient level. The
program directly addresses individual needs through adaptive and instructional
software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading, writing, and
vocabulary skills.

TUTORING CENTER / CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS

The Tutoring Center, a program of Cambridge School Volunteers (CSV), provides an environment in which all students can work toward their personal goals and can achieve academic success.
Volunteer tutors are recruited by CSV and are available before school (7:30 - 8:05 AM), during school, and after school (2:30-3:30PM) to meet with students.
CRLS students are invited to apply for individual tutors in the
Tutoring Center, room R319. The application process involves an
interview with the Tutoring Center manager in which academic
needs and time availability are discussed. Once a student is paired
with a tutor, a twice-weekly commitment is expected for as long as
the student requires support.
Drop-In Math, another program of CSV, is located near the
Tutoring Center. Volunteer tutors are available before school for
short-term, drop-in tutoring support in all levels of Math. No
appointment is necessary. See the Tutoring Center manager for
further information.
UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM / TALENT SEARCH
The MIT-Wellesley Upward Bound and the MIT Educational
Talent Search programs are federally sponsored, year-round,
educational programs that provide academic support and career
and college advising to low-income and/or first-generation college
bound youths who wish to continue their education beyond high
school. These programs stress the development of sound academic
skills and motivation, as well as provide information and
assistance regarding college admissions and financial aid. In
addition to its school year program, the Upward Bound program
offers a summer residential session consisting of six weeks of
intense, academic study on the Wellesley College campus. The
Educational Talent Search Program features year-round college and
career exploration through informative workshops and visits to
colleges and businesses throughout New England. For more
