History & Social Science
The 8-12th grade "pathway" for history/social science study in the Cambridge Public Schools is as follows:
- Grade 8: United States History I (1763 - 1877)
- Grade 9: World History I (500 - 1800)
- Grade 10: World History II (1900 - present)
- Grade 11: United States History II (1877 - present)
- Grade 12: Reserved for electives in the discipline
All grade 9 and 10 students will take a sequence of core history courses that range from 500 CE to the modern era. The history content strand supports and is related to what students are simultaneously studying in World Literature and is a requirement for graduation.
In grade 11, students should take a year-long course in United States History from 1865 to the present. The literature content strand in the junior year supports and integrates this learning as well. Some students may choose AP United States History as juniors. United States History is a requirement for graduation.
In the 12th grade, students may choose either two semester electives or a full-year AP course.
Students may choose History/Social Science electives as underclassmen, providing that their basic requirements in the discipline are met.
