CRLS Recognizes its Unsung Heroes

Unsung Heroes

Twelve Cambridge Rindge and Latin students recently received Unsung Hero awards in recognition of the efforts each made during the spring 2008 semester to better themselves and the CRLS community.

Students are nominated for the Unsung Hero award by their teachers and deans of the four Learning Communities.  Students who demonstrate progress as emerging achievers based on academic progress, improved attendance, citizenship, stewardship, or athletic leadership vis-à-vis the prior academic semester are eligible for nomination.  Winners receive a certificate of achievement and a specially-designed watch bearing the Falcon, the CRLS logo, and are recognized publicly among an audience of their peers.

In addition to the 12 current CRLS students, four recent graduates were given “Unsung Senior” awards as well.  These four: Marthe Pierre, Jean Marc Delva, Ta’Keame Gomes and Tenzin Sherab, were members of CRLS’ “Fabulous Fourteen” of the Class of 2008.  The Unsung Seniors awards recipients were selected to the Fabulous Fourteen by their peers as exemplars of ambassadorship of the CRLS experience.

This is the second round of Unsung Hero award ceremonies.  The first was in February 2008 when sixteen students were recognized for their improvement during the fall 2007 semester.  In all, there have been 32 award recipients to-date.  The next round will come during the spring 2009 semester.

The Unsung Heroes idea was the brainchild of Principal Dr. Christopher Saheed and Jamalh Prince, a Dean of Students who coordinates the events with the other Deans of Students. Saheed and the deans see the awards as a means of acknowledging the quiet, often heroic and under-recognized steps students take toward improving themselves and helping others.  “The Unsung Heroes program was designed to recognize students who have made a contribution to the CRLS community without seeking recognition for it,” Prince said. During the recent award ceremony, Prince noted the “excitement on the students' and staff's faces.”

The November winners, by Learning Community and grade, were:

Learning Community C:  Miriam Bromfield (10), Kharl Pierre (11), Dorcas Yip (12)
Learning Community R:  Sanlley Cadet (10), Christina Chatelain (11), Kajon Pompey (12)
Learning Community L:  Amatullah Mervin (10), Bessina Cabe (11), Jacob Harris (12)
Learning Community S:  Kelsha Hause (10), Linnea Russell (11), Mitchell Bryant (12)

Funding for the awards and watches, and a good measure of spirit for the program, comes from the Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (FOCRLS).  FOCRLS is a parent-run, tax-exempt foundation whose mission is to support CRLS’ academic and social development programs.  In addition to the Unsung Hero awards, FOCRLS also uses tax-deductible donations it receives to fund faculty grants and Exemplary Teacher awards
