Superintendent Search 2015: Community Involvement

The School Committee invites and welcomes community involvement and engagement, and is offering a number of ways in which Cambridge Public Schools stakeholders can have an important voice in the Superintendent of Schools search and selection process, including an online survey, a community-based Superintendent Search Interview Committee, focus groups, community forums, and more. 

Ways to Engage in the Superintendent Search and Selection Process (See flyer >>)
  • You can advise the School Committee of the characteristics you consider important and wish to see in our next Superintendent by participating in the Superintendent Search SurveySurvey closes on September 10.

  • Participate in a focus group/community forum on Wednesday, August 26; Thursday, August 27; Monday, August 31; and Tuesday, September 1, 2015 to help develop a Leadership Profile for the next Superintendent. All community members are invited to participate in one of the Superintendent Leadership Profile Focus Groups and Community Forums. Sessions are scheduled for parents/guardians, students, teachers, staff, administrators, school council leadership, union leadership, family liaisons, community and business partners, members of the clergy, higher ed representatives, and other stakeholders. A number of community-wide forums are also scheduled which are open for all to attend. See focus group schedule >>

  • The School Committee is convening a 16-18 member Superintendent Search Interview Committee (SSIC)that is inclusive and representative of a diverse cross-section of stakeholders in the Cambridge Public Schools.

    The SSIC will be comprised of three (3) School Committee members; three (3) Educational Representatives* (2 teachers and one principal representing Grades JK-5, 6-8, and 9-12); three (3) City-wide Parent Representatives (1 JK-5; 1 Gr. 6-8; 1 CRLS); two (2) non-profit Community Partner representatives; two (2) Business-related representatives (STEAM and Partnership experience); one (1) Cabinet representative*; one (1) City Manager representative*; and one (1) independent Diversity/Affirmative Action representative. Representatives of groups marked with an asterisk (* - Educational, Cabinet and City Manager representatives) will be selected by their representative groups. Others may self-nominate themselves for consideration for participation on the Superintendent Search Interview Committee (SSIC) by completing and submitting the Self-Nomination form. Should you prefer to submit a written application, paper applications are available at the School Committee Office located at 459 Broadway, and can be requested by emailing [email protected] or calling the School Committee Office at 617.349.6620. Please note that the deadline for submittal and receipt of Self-Nomination forms for the Superintendent Search Interview Committee (SSIC) is 5PM on Friday, September 11, 2015. It is anticipated that those selected to serve on the SSC will be notified during the week of September 14th.

  • Once Finalist Candidates have been selected, members of the community will have an opportunity to engage at an open stakeholder and town-meeting style Community Forum.

  • You can also keep directly up-to-date by attending School Committee Meetings relating to the Superintendent Search and other matters.   • In addition to using the online Superintendent Search survey to indicate the qualities and characteristics you think are important that the next Superintendent of Schools possess, you can keep abreast of developments by watching Channel 99 for cable broadcasts of School Committee Meetings; you can also access live-streamed School Committee meetings online when meetings are in session.
