CPS Triumphs at History Day Competition

On Saturday, February 28th, Cambridge Public Schools scholars competed in the regional competition of National History Day. Participating students started in September by choosing a topic that fit the theme "Leadership and Legacy in History." After conducting wide research, students present their work as a research paper, exhibit, documentary, website, or performance.

In the Junior Division, grades six through eight, five CPS scholars prepared projects. Putnam Avenue Upper School (PAUS) eighth grade scholar Camar Kinch created an exhibit entitled: Robert Rogers: Revolutionizing War in North America. Rogers created a scouting unit called the Rangers during the French and Indian War. At Cambridge Street Upper School (CSUS), seventh grade scholar Alice Jacob wrote a research paper on local feminist, Margaret Fuller, that urges us to carry on her legacy of independence through education. Sam Kravitz and Zev Dickstein interviewed many journalists to create a documentary highlighting the work of Ben Bradlee, who, as Executive Editor of the Washington Post, struggled to maintain freedom of the press and left a legacy of younger journalists to continue the fight. Another exciting exhibit titled "Judged by the Content of their Character: Still a Dream" takes visitors on a personal March for Freedom, asking them to consider the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and choose how they will respond to discrimination.

After working hard all year, the efforts of the scholars were rewarded by the judges when Kinch won an honorable mention, "Judged by the Content of their Character" won third place, Alice Jacob won second place, and Sam Kravitz and Zev Dickstein won first place.

Our Senior team also won high honors, almost sweeping the research paper category. Winning Honorable Mention for their papers were Ben Kendall and Zachary Rothenberg. Karolyn Lee won second place, and Cameron Chertavian won first place.

All scholars placing first, second, or third will continue to the State Competition on April 11. Wish them luck!
