Recalled SoyNut Butter in use at One CPS School

Late on March 8, CPS was notified of the recall of I.M. Healthy brand SoyNut Butter, which has recently been recalled nationwide due to possible E. coli contamination. This product is not widely used in CPS but had been in use for several weeks at one school, Fletcher Maynard Academy. Families at the school have been notified, and the product was immediately removed from service.

Out of concern for the fundamental importance of student health and safety, CPS is working in coordination with the Cambridge Public Health Department, which has provided us with several helpful online resources as a precaution. According to the Centers for Disease Control, "People usually get sick from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli 2-8 days (average of 3-4 days) after swallowing the germ." In rare cases the illness can be severe but as stated in the fact sheet from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (below), symptoms commonly go away by themselves after 5 to 7 days.
