CPS selected Perkins-Eastman for the major renovation or rebuilding of the Putnam Avenue Upper Campus and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School, located at 100 Putnam Avenue. In February the firm began feasibility study, which was completed within 4 months. The building will be vacated at the end of June 2012 and will reopen in September 2015.

This major building project is the first of a long-range building plan supported by the City of Cambridge, based on the Comprehensive Facilities Plan drafted in spring 2011.

In addition to this major renovation, the plan calls for immediate short-term improvements at the four Upper Campuses for science labs, libraries, classroom technology, and student lockers. The Upton Street building, which will house the Amigos School beginning in September 2012, was also slated to receive cosmetic improvements to prepare the space for a K-8 program after years of mixed use that included classrooms and administrative offices.
