The district has a well developed farm to school program that has the support of the director, a district-wide garden program and support from the public health department and the local policy council. Children learn about growing and eating local food in the garden, cafeteria, snack program and sometimes in the classroom. Because local food is part of the normal infrastructure children are exposed early to fresh tasty and local food, and this makes a difference. Their enthusiasm is often in evidence in participation shown in the lunchtime self-serve salad bars in 7 schools with children from pre-kindergarten to high school.
