The Amigos School implements a Spanish/English dual language immersion approach, serving native speakers of English and of Spanish, from Junior Kindergarten through the eighth grade. The Amigos School promotes a bilingual, multicultural environment by providing 50% of instruction in English and 50% in Spanish. Native English Speakers and native Spanish speakers acquire proficiency in a second language through interactions with each other and through curricula that gives equal academic instruction in both languages and through all content areas. Our standards-based instruction in both languages ensures that all students are able to achieve high academic standards as measured by state and local tests. Our students become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural citizens. The Amigos School has two classrooms in all grade levels K-8. There is one Junior Kindergarten classroom.
The three major goals of Amigos are:
- To integrate academic instruction through the implementation of state and local frameworks and standards so that all students will become bilingual and biliterate.
- To provide students, teachers, and staff with an environment that supports a learning community and develops cross-cultural understanding.
- To provide opportunities for positive interactions among students and their families and to encourage the sharing of their cultural heritages.
The environment at the Amigos School supports a learning community that develops cross-cultural understanding. Teaching focuses on individual strengths and an emphasis on cooperative learning in a culturally and linguistically integrated setting.
The Amigos School values all cultures and languages. The focus is on developing a balance between the Spanish and English languages, spoken and written, informal and academic. The Amigos School fosters equal status for both languages. Amigos strives to create a school atmosphere that is truly bilingual. We use Spanish, along with English, in the public domain - in the school office, in the corridors, at school assemblies and at our meetings.
