MONOLOGUE SAMPLE NO. 1

Hello loving people of Brazil. I came to you from Portugal. I am Pedro Alberto and I want your land. If I don't get it I shall scream, cry and bombard you with my loyal crew.

But, how rude of me. I want to tell you a little about myself.

I am the son of a noble and royal family and friend of King Manuel. I was educated by the royal court because I'm so special. So much so that when I was 32 I was appointed second commander of an expedition to India (Turned out the stuck-up Vasco de Gama was first commander and the first one to tip off King Manuel about India.).

However, I got to be in charge of a man named Bartolomew Diaz. He was one of my fleet officers. Since King Manuel still had his doubts about my talents, he got a man named Nicholas Cole, an experienced explorer, to go with me on the expedition. I asked for his autograph and he gave it to me.

He did help me guide my thirteen ships…I guess. Anyway, we still got blown over here, and after this I plan to go to India, my real destination, and around the Cape of Good Hope. But I still think Officer Diaz will be in for a rough time because I learned there's going to be some storms down there.

After I return to Portugal I will live in relaxation. And to top it off, a fifth grader in the year 2001 will do a report and speech about me. That would be nice.

Anyway, my main goal of reaching India can wait. I want this land, so give it up!

MONOLOGUE SAMPLE NO. 2

Hi. I'm Prince Henry the Navigator. I'm the 3rd son of King John the First. I was born March 4th, 1394 in Portugal. I have very strong Christian beliefs. My mom wanted me to be very smart so she pushed me hard in school. I enjoyed math and navigating as a kid. I started sailing when I was 21, in 1415.

I went to Morocco, which was a Muslim country, and tried to change the Muslims there to Christians. We had a war with them because they wouldn't convert and we won.

A few years later I got a ship and hired two men to go to Africa. They ran into a storm and found an empty island by accident because they were being pushed by the storm. They took some plant specimens, as I told them to, and came back to Portugal.

When they came back, I hired some more people and we all went back to the island. It happened that one of the people on board had a pregnant rabbit with him. We stopped on that island for a while but because of that one rabbit the rabbit population grew so huge we had to leave.

When I grew older I opened a navigating school and got the nickname of "the Navigator" even though I never explored. Sure, I went on expeditions, and went to already found places, but I never explored.

I never achieved my goal of reaching the west coast of Africa. No other explorer had sailed there and there were legends that said your ship would be destroyed if you tried. I was very curious to see what was there.
