Unit Title: Chinese Belief Systems, Craven et. al.

What Do I Believe?

China Belief Systems Project Assignment Sheet

One of the benefits of studying a different culture is that, in the process, we study ourselves. We've been exploring three Chinese belief systems. We've thought about how these ideas can play out in our own lives.

Now we want you to consider the question: What do I believe? What is important to you? What principles should guide an individual as that person lives within his or her community?

You will create a booklet that explores your personal belief system. There are certain guidelines you need to follow.

Your booklet needs to include:

A. Personal Belief Essay

This is a statement in which you present your own beliefs on what is "the way" that best ensures the well-being of an individual and a community. This statement may be an exploration of a religion that you associate yourself with, it may be your own personal belief(s), or it may be some combination of any or all of the systems you know through class and through your life. Whatever it is, it needs to be clearly presented with examples that help show what you mean.

B. Your interpretations and connections to an important tenet in Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism

For each of the three belief systems, choose at least one tenet, interpret it, and relate it to your own beliefs. Is it a part of what you believe or does it help you explain what you don't believe? Compare and/or contrast each tenet to the philosophies of the other two belief systems.

C. Art

Include your Chinese brush painting and your mandala. Each piece must be accompanied by a one-page artist's statement and explanation.
