"When teachers take to it, for those teachers that do,
they have completely changed the way they do their
curriculum. They have taken it and run with it." |
First-year K-5 Teacher
Workshops 2003-2004 Tuesday, September
30 Storytelling This sequence of five workshops begins with the
foundation of all drama--story. Beginning with
stories from our lives, we will create simple
characters and recognize the dramatic form in a
story. We will also use existing stories and apply
mapping, sequencing, and tableau techniques to
retell them. Throughout all five workshops, attention will be
paid to developing cooperation, a sense of self
(both physical and expressive) and literacy. We
will also address assessment and the role of
feedback to enhance instruction and guide student
revision. Tuesday, December
2 Creative Dramatics Following the storytelling will be a day devoted
to dramatic games and techniques for use in the
classroom. Our focus will be to enhance oral and
written communication, work on memory, group
dynamics, and non-verbal expression (creative
movement and sound). We will be applying these
tools to various curriculum areas. Tuesday, January
27 Playmaking Playmaking will address how to adapt material
from across the curriculum to create classroom
dramas. Attention will be given to how the work can
increase reading comprehension and positive work
habits, develop higher order thinking skills (such
as discerning point of view or genre) and
contribute to understanding basic dramatic elements
such as character and plot. Tuesday, March
2 Oral and Written Language Using poetry and literature appropriate for
various grade levels, we will look at ways to
encourage students to express themselves vocally,
learn group skills such as sequenced speaking,
dramatic dialogue, recitation, and choral speaking,
and to develop individual skills such as
interpreting character and acting. Tuesday, April
27 Creating Original Drama The final workshop will take all of the
techniques explored during the year and pull them
together. The day will be a mini-model of how to
develop a dramatic event (formal or informal) with
your class. We will go over how to sequence the
dramatic work, how much time it will take, and
possible roles/jobs for students. Saturday Drama

Eight times a year, the entire CPSDC community--teachers,
artists, and co-directors --comes together to discuss,
explore and exchange ideas about using drama in the
classroom. Each meeting has a different emphasis. Meetings
are held in the Department of Drama and Dance in the
basement of Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School. |
