SCREENING FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS OF 3 AND 4 YEAR OLD CHILDREN

The Cambridge Public Schools Preschool team offers screenings for three and four year old children whose parents or care providers have concerns about a child's speech/language, cognitive, social/ emotional and/or motor skill development. This screening is part of local efforts of Child Find, a component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that requires local communities to identify, locate, and evaluate young children with disabilities, who are in need of early intervention or special education services. The screening is an ongoing service for Cambridge families and regularly takes place at the Upton Street Building on Upton Street near Central Square by scheduled appointment.

The screening team includes speech language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists as well as preschool psychologists and special education teachers. Information will also be collected to help the screening around the child's development, preschool experiences and medical history. At times an observation at the child's preschool may be required.

The Preschool Team is available to answer any questions parents may have about the screening process and special education services. Parents will be notified in writing of the results after the screening have been completed.

This screening is free of charge and is mandated by federal and state laws.

To make an appointment please call Susan Evans of Special Start at 617-349-6850.
