Mission & Philosophy

The purpose of the Morse School is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and virtues they need to achieve full potential in their personal and professional life and to contribute actively to the civic and economic life of our diverse and changing democratic society.

We believe that children who graduate from our school should have:

  • A solid foundation of knowledge on which to base critical and creative thinking.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with others through writing, speaking, the arts, and technology.
  • The confidence to face the new and unknown and the discipline to persevere in their purpose.
  • Respect for self and others and an understanding of people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs.
  • A sense of civic responsibility, from commitment to the local community to an awareness of world issues.
  • A recognition of the importance of education as a lifelong effort so that students can adapt to change and challenge and be prepared for the opportunities for the future.

To achieve this purpose, the school provides:

  • The Core Knowledge comprehensive, culturally-integrated curriculum, which builds children's knowledge step by step through the grades in a coordinated sequence, and incorporates local and state curriculum guidelines.
  • Dedicated and committed teachers, who understand that the successful teaching of children with differing learning styles requires clarity, tenacity and creativity.
  • A character education curriculum that emphasizes the classical virtues.
  • A safe, friendly, nurturing environment in which all children of all abilities can grow academically and emotionally and develop a sense of community.
  • An inclusionary program which fosters educational growth in all children.
  • A high level of training in mathematics, science, and computer technology.
  • The opportunity for parents and guardians to play an active role in our school's decision making process through a number of formal and informal means.
