Core Knowledge Overview
The Morse School has been a Core Knowledge School since 1993. The Foundation's Core Knowledge Sequence is "a consensus-based model of specific content guidelines that, as the basis of about 50% of a school's curriculum, can provide a solid, coherent foundation of learning for students (Core Knowledge Foundation, 1993)". The Sequence presents a "planned progression of specific knowledge in history, geography, mathematics, science, language arts, and fine arts (Core Knowledge Foundation, 1993)."
The Morse School's Core Knowledge Curriculum is based upon the Core Knowledge Sequence and is integrated with local and state initiatives. This culturally-integrated curriculum builds students' knowledge step by step through the grades in a coordinated sequence. Families receive a syllabus each month detailing the framework of what will be taught. The nature of the Core Knowledge Curriculum is spiral learning and has elicited school-wide planning, increased opportunities for collaboration and professional development, and improved student achievement. We have noticed a direct correlation between the improvement in standardized test scores and the implementation of the Morse School's Core Knowledge Curriculum.
Now in its twelfth year of implementation, the Morse School demonstrates "a process of great accountability" in its effective efforts to plan, align, implement, and assess the curriculum.
