The Primary Cluster at the Morse School consists of teachers of students in kindergarten through second grade. The Primary Cluster meets weekly to monitor and evaluate student learning and progress. As part of the K-2 model, the early childhood specialist coordinates and supervises the work of the reading assistants and works directly in the classroom with all students. The Learning Disabilities Teacher and Early Childhood Resource Specialist work with a small group of students and offer support in regular classrooms as well.
The Core Knowledge Curriculum at the Morse is content-rich and demanding, both of teachers and students. In kindergarten, children learn about Pueblo culture. First grade students learn to create still life paintings as part of their Fine Arts Core Knowledge Sequence. To demonstrate what they know about the Revolutionary War, children in the first grade write Revolutionary War Riddles. In the second grade, students perform a musical show on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Our school emphasizes resource-based learning, and there is much collaboration between the library media specialist, teachers, and support staff in the quest for interesting and grade-level appropriate materials, including technology.
To address the unique needs of every student, a variety of materials and approaches are used to teach reading in the lower grades. These include basal readers, trade books, tapes, Big Books, sight words, whole language, and phonics. The Literacy Program was developed in the first grade to support our growing readers and writers.
