- Originally formed in 1974, the King Open School's philosophy is based on the belief that children learn best when pursuing mastery in work and play situations that interest them, and that all students are capable of reaching their potential and thriving in their own manner. We stress a noncompetitive environment and foster a strong commitment to teaching social justice and improving cultural understanding.
- The King Open School collaborates with Wheelock College as a Professional Development School, focusing on family partnerships, science and teacher-training. Family involvement is a great strength of the King Open School, and because of this we continue to grow into a strong family center, working for the needs of all families.
- King Open seeks to meet our educational goals by providing a thoughtfully planned, yet informal learning environment--rich in academic content. One of our objectives is to demonstrate to our students that there are many approaches for reaching similar goals; that all approaches should be respected and encouraged.
- King Open provides a variety of learning activities; children learn to take responsibility for their own learning with guidance from teachers.
- King Open views mistakes as valuable learning tools; it encourages not competition but rather the achievement of learning goals.
- Our school develops self-expression and self control, along with self-motivation and self-discipline and considers learning a lifelong process and encourages teachers and parents as well as students to continue to grow.
