The King Open School is housed in a spacious building in East Cambridge adjacent to newly renovated baseball/softball fields and a park.
King Open School collaborates with many of the colleges and universities in the Boston area as a Professional Development School, focusing on family partnerships, teacher training, and multi-grade classrooms.
Students who choose to participate in the two-way bilingual program (OLA) are instructed in both English and Portuguese, and develop speaking, reading, and writing competencies in both languages.
In collaboration with the Cheche Konnen Group, King Open School has been awarded a four-year, $1.5 million National Science Foundation grant to develop faculty expertise for educational excellence.
Over the years, the King Open School has developed a culture in which children, parents and staff are encouraged to learn about each other and to respond sensitively to each other's needs. Many parents comment on how considerate older King Open students are to younger students in the hallways, cafeteria and playground.
The feeling of community has grown beyond the perimeters of King Open's walls and hours. Some parents and staff member tutor children who either are having academic difficulties or show exceptional talent. Some parents mentor other parents children, giving them access to opportunities their own parents may not have had. Parents get together to share skills that may make things easier at home, work, or school. This all occurs informally, outside King Open's instructional channels of family involvement.
