"Gateway" by Mags Harries is a work of public art commissioned by the Cambridge Arts Council in 1983. It was originally designed for a corridor space at the old Longfellow School, to bridge between the image of a Japanese gateway and table. The artist, Mags Harries, says “I also wanted the parents of the children at Longfellow to re-remember when they were children, a connection to their child's perspective of the world.” Mags Harries has created many works of public art. Other pieces in the area include "Glove Cycle" in the Porter Square T station, and "Drawn Water" at the Water Purification Plant at Fresh Pond.

On January 22, second, third, fourth, and fifth grade students welcomed author illustrator Timothy Basil Ering to the Kennedy Longfellow School. Ering, the illustrator of The Tale of Despereaux and the author/illustrator of Frog Belly Rat Bone and Necks out For Adventure, regaled the students with stories of a life of adventure, stressing the important message that success is often preceeded by many disappointments.
