Dr. Eli Newberger and the Cupcake Philharmonic Performs Tubby the Tuba
The Cupcake Philharmonic Orchestra, a chamber ensemble, performs "Tubby the Tuba, The Oompah Heard Around the World" at the Baldwin School. Tuby the Tuba is a wonderful children's book that brings alive music from all instruments. A number of reputable musicians visited our school on Monday, May 7 to perform the book to all of our K-3 students. The Cupcake Philharmonic Orchestra members include Eli Newberger, doctor, musician and author of The Men They Will Become, Mike Roylance, principal tuba with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Carolyn Newberger who plays flute and piccolo, and narrator and retired assistant principal of the Driscoll School in Brookline, Chuck Weed. Eli Newberger, MD, plays both classical and jazz tuba, is a pediatrician, and an expert on child abuse and influential author. He teaches at the Harvard Medical School and founded the Child Protection Team and the Family Development Program at Children’s Hospital in Boston. He was for 30 years (1971-2001) the high-profile tuba player with the New Black Eagle Jazz Band, one of the most prestigious jazz ensembles performing today. A rave review of the band in the New York Times hailed Eli Newberger as one of the outstanding tuba players in the country.
This assembly was organized by the Baldwin School parent and Art Committee member Fran Cronin. The photos below feature Mike Roylance, Carolyn Newberger, Eli Newberger and our principal, Mrs. Eirich (holding a copy of Tubby the Tuba).
